I saw a box of Grits in the grocery store and somehow thought this was something served with lunch or dinner. However, it was in the breakfast cereal aisle, and it looked exactly like the Cream of Wheat cereal.
So, now I'm curious ... What's your take on the best ways and hows you'd ever cook grits ... if you'd ever cook them?

I eat grits with eggs for breakfast and when I make shrimp and grits, a heavenly dish.

It became quite the thing to dress grits up with cheese and other good stuff and serve it as a side with dinner. One of my sister's favorites is shrimp and grits served at a very fancy restaurant. I personally pass on grits. If you order a full breakfast in the South, you'll assuredly get a serving on your plate.

I often eat cheesy grits for supper when I'm home alone, especially if I'm feeling cold or a little under the weather. I get the Old Fashioned grits, never instant grits. Those are awful. I cook them in a large bowl in the microwave at 50% for 7 minutes per the package directions, then add butter and cheese. The normal way of cooking them are on the stovetop in a saucepan though.

I grew up eating grits and prefer mine with cheese and eggs. I don't eat them often because they lack the saiety of oatmeal. I will also eat them as an entree with dishes similar to those that have polenta or risotto. Chef Carla Hall has shared new reciples that use pot likker to flavor various foods incluiding a fennel pot likker for shrimp and grits.

Great shrimp and grits recipe online is Maverick grits! Also, there are "breakfast" shrimp and grits, with a light gravy including a little bacon sauce/gravy.
I like white grits best, but both are good! The old timers cook them longer than stated on packages today.

@Sooner , I'll have to look for breakfast shrimp and grits. Are the Maverick grits spicy? That's my only issue with some of the Shrimp & Grits. I know last time I had them at Pappadeaux's the waiter suggested the sauce on the side since it was spicy. That way you could add as much spice as you wanted or not.

I have grown a lot from completely avoiding grits when I first started dating a native Southerner. Now I love them, but they do need a good dose of butter and salt.
I love to mix bites of scrambled eggs with a serving of grits on my plate.
We don't eat them often at home and mostly eat them at restaurants as a substitute for hashed brown potatoes. When I do fix them, I use the "quick 5-minute" Quaker Oats brand, not the instant or the long-cooking type.
You learn after a while to add more water and cook longer than the box specifies, if you plan to keep the grits moist and warm until served. Otherwise they clump into a single lump.
While I've never ordered it, Shrimp and Grits and variations are a standard dinner entree at high-end restaurants in the South and elsewhere. My Southern-born daughter-in-law orders them every time we eat out with the kids, no matter where we are dining.

I grew up eating a lot of grits. Mom would serve them for breakfast and at dinner sometime. I did not mind them for either meal but I did much prefer cream of wheat for breakfast and rice at dinner time. Even with butter and some sugar they still were not as good as the other two items. I do not believe I have ever served them to my family.

I buy the Instant grits in indivisable packets, cook in the microwave, add butter and salt, and I love them as a lunch time food. Always get them in NC at the restaurant for breakfast when on vacation with my eggs. Try them.
