Like Antoinella, my close friend also has asthma, and a cough is often the first sign that an asthma attack is starting.
At that point the medicine in the inhaler is inadequate, and my friend immediately goes for stronger meds to try to prevent a full blown attack which usually ends in her hospitalization.
