There are very few retailers that let you cancel after the order is placed. People need to stop and think before hitting that last button.
@CalminHeart I think 10 to 15 minutes is good customer service to let one cancel an order. What retailer allows it? Amazon on all my orders, Zulily, 6PM, Zappos, The Gap, many more, and almost all food deliveries.
I buy for me, my sister, and my mom regularly. My sister & mom are much older and never shop online. Sometimes I see something they need or want, but they get back to me slowly and I may have to cancel to edit the order. I don't purchase on a whim. But when I need to get their clothes, personal items, food delivered (they live 300 miles away), etc., sometimes I'm working on crunch time because I also telework.
Everyone's situation isn't the same.
True, but the difference here is that with the exception of Amazon, the other retailers you noted don't ship from vendors, but from their own warehouses. With Amazon, I have tried to cancel orders from 3rd parties that haven't been able to be canceled either. Actual Amazon orders can be canceled pretty much anytime.

@BalletBabe Good advice, but good advice always.
After I taught myself to walk away from the TV or my computer before placing an order just because I saw a possibility, I haven't nnded to cancel anything, and have had fewer returns than I had in what lots of posters think were years when QVC had no problems. I put 3 long-time vendors on my personal Do Not Buy list within a few months! It was several years into the new century before I tried 2 of them again. One never.

@Tori3569 I have always been able to cancel with Zulily, and they never had their own warehouse. I cancel with 6PM, and they even clearly outline their cancellation process on their site. The only time I've even not been able to cancel is when too much time has lapsed, and that's absolutely understandable.

Sure, having a few minutes would be nice but it's not required and no retailer is obligated to do it.
I buy online for my 92 yr old dad, no different than you buying for your family. The customer made the decision to buy something so it's on the customer if it doesn't work out or if there are second thoughts.

I agree, it's totally on the customer. But I like, and remember, the added customer service of some retailers. There are things a retailer can do to make a customer truly loyal, and sometimes it's not just about price. I never have an intention of cancelling. It just something that happens every blue moon, and I'm always relieved when it's successful in those few minutes. That's full cycle customer service to me.

@BalletBabe This has been addressed here many times. It's not clear, and I doubt anybody on this forum knows why, some items can be cancelled and others cannot.
Like @CalminHeart states, it really is ultimately on the customer. A shopper hits that BUY button too easily. It's up to us to do our research and be sure we want the item, it's not the retailers responsibility to let us change our minds when another potential buyer WOULD make the purchase. When we cancel it could very well prevent another sale to perhaps a new customer.
I do understand the frustration when we change our minds and can't stop the sale. I also understand the frustration on delayed shipment. We can't have it both ways. Most people want their items as quick as possible, especially at this time of year. We don't want it sitting there in limbo, able to cancel, causing further shipping delays than there already are.
To @Caaareful Shopper , as for Zulily, and this is pre-going out of business, they actually TAKE orders when you buy something. Then, they order everything that is purchased from them to the vendor who in turn, ships only what is ordered to Zulily, finally it is shipped from Zulily. Very long process. This is why there are thousands of complaints about length of shipping from them, they have very little in stock of anything (except now that they are going out of business they are selling what's in stock). So yes, you can cancel with Zulily but shipping tended to take longer.
With 6PM you can cancel on "select" items. Not everything. And, it is for a very short period of time, I believe minutes not hours.

At this time of year, the crunch is on. If there's any hope of getting it by Christmas, I would expect there would not be any time for the order to be cancelled.

@cjm61 I don't think cancelling after hours should ever be allowed. My comments were all about 10 minutes or so.
Zulily gets flack about their longer delivery times because people don't read the estimated delivery time for their specific items ordered. Zulily has never hidden that information, it's all clearly stated for each item. I have never been disappointed in Zuliy's delivery time because I purchased based on whether I needed that item right away or not.

I think they're concentrating on getting their orders out quickly that they have advertised to arrive by Christmas. I have some orders that specifically state "Holiday Delivery", which I've never seen before. Those are the ones that shipped the same day I ordered and are on their way.
Others, like my auto deliveries, are taking longer than normal to ship. I think those "regular" orders aren't the priority right now.
12-15-2023 09:15 AM
@Caaareful Shopper Right about Zulily. People don't pay attention to the delivery dates. However, you pointed out that you could cancel orders on Zulily. I was explaining why you can. At least in the past, most everything was basically a pre-order. They also had a "hold" on your items since they gave you free shipping the rest of the day or the entire weekend if you ordered on a Friday or Saturday. So, yes, it was easy for them to cancel within a day or hours since your order was essentially not placed yet.
I purchased frequently from Zulily in the beginning, so many cool, unique items. Shipping was never a problem since I knew it would take longer than usual. In some cases I received items 6 weeks later.
