GLP-1 MEDS AND PLUS SIZE CLOTHING SALES

[ Edited ]
Interesting piece from Forbes: Retail analysts say the growing popularity of GLP-1 medications has contributed to an overall decline in the sale of women AND men's plus-size clothing.
"Plus-size clothing, known in the retail trade as extended sized clothing, generally starts at size 14 or 16. Sales of extended sizes at Target, Old Navy, Loft and Men's Warehouse have
fallen extensively in the past 6 months, including a 30 percent drop off on Target's website.

The influence of drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound has apparently led several major retailers to cut back on their fourth quarter orders for extended sizes, or eliminate the lines entirely.
The increased availability and lower cost of GLP-1s has also been tied to declining pizza, baked goods, snack foods and alcoholic drink sales nationwide.
Clothing company DXL, which sells men’s big and tall apparel, estimated that up to 25% of its customers are on weight-loss drugs in its March earnings call. JP Morgan estimated around 10 million Americans were on GLP-1 treatments in 2025."

Re: GLP-1 MEDS AND PLUS SIZE CLOTHING SALES

I've been on mounjaro for over a year. My doctor who i saw this mornIng, wants me to lose five more pounds and that will put my bmi into the normal range. I believe that article- we dont have the appetite or desire for all of the high calorie, high fat foods that got us overweight. My own weight loss has been quite slow-22 pounds-but doctor has been satisfied. It slowed down and stopped when I went back from the middle dose to the lower one due to side effects. Now im back on 5 mg no more side effects, wt loss is steady. Happy with results and my doc is thrilled with the big improvements in my labs.

Re plus size clothes, there will always be a need.

I think there is plus sized clothing, which I interpret as people who are just bigger than average, and then there is plus-plus sized clothing, which I'd say is for people who are seriously overweight and unhealthy.  For whatever reasons, I'd say it's a good thing if the demand for this extreme is being diminished.

@smoochy
Congratulations and way to go, friend! Anyone who has struggled with their weight knows that the "food noise," the carb and sugar cravings and the yo-yo dieting are unrelenting and extremely difficult to overcome. I have been there!
My best friend and my sister had similar stories to yours and their lives have been radically improved by the use of Zepbound.
The interesting thing to me is whether The Q will see a marked decrease in plus size clothing sales. I am not sure their quarterly reports break down sales by size?

thanks. The med is terribly expensive. I am blessed to be able to afford it. My mental health improved also- my self esteem is closely tied to my appearance and weight. The extra 25-30 pounds made me so unhappy yet I couldn't stick to a plan- yo yo was my middle name. Up ten, down four, up eight etc. Im anxious about going off this med because I know the dreaded food noise will return. Need to have my battle plan in place.

You and your sister and friend certainly understand. Are they still on the med?

I think what determines plus sized clothing, has to do with your height and frame size.  I'm 5'4" and small boned.  If I were wearing a size 14, it would be a plus size for me.  My taller sister and cousins look just right in that size.

very interesting point. I too am 5'4", I think Im small boned? 6" wrists, narrow hands and feet, size 5 ring finger, size 3 pinky, skinny legs and ankles. I was wearing a size 14 at my highest weight of 167. I definitely looked overweight! Because I was. Yes a 14 or 16 looks perfect on a certain size individual, taking height and body frame into account

Re: GLP-1 MEDS AND PLUS SIZE CLOTHING SALES

I am glad those meds are working for people. I have to wonder though if there are long term side affects that are still unknown. Plus, do you really want to be on them for the rest of your life? If once off the drugs you go back to where you were before as far as appetite and cravings, then what have you really accomplished?
