Worried about our kitty

[ Edited ]

We adopted a little shelter kitty 6 months ago. She was just a tiny thing and was in pretty bad shape when we got her. We had just lost our precious lab after a long illness, and, I guess we just needed something that needed us. We are too old to get another dog, and our children would not want it when we are gone, but we have a daughter who would take a kitty.

To make a long story short, we nurtured her back to health and she has been a joy for us.  She is helping to heal our broken hearts.... in a different way than a dog would have of course, but she is precious and we are totally smitten.

Today is Sunday, and I know I will be taking her to the vet tomorrow.  She is eating and drinking, and her little kidneys and bowls are working, but she has been throwing up her canned food.  I'm amazed that her bowls are still working because she can't be getting much nourishment.  She's eating a bite ot two her kitty kibble and that must be where she is getting her nourishment, but I know she is dehydrated .  She acts hungry and will go to her canned food bowl and meow.

I'm afraid to give her any more canned food.  Any suggesstions until we can get her to the Vet?

You're going to the vet tomorrow.  Until then, put down newspapers where she throws up so the cat will go there again.

There are things I can suggest but its best to follow the vets suggestions first.

You say she is drinking—can she keep just water down, without any food?

Thank you.  She will definitely be going to the Vet.  We just hate seeing the little thing in such distress and apparently hungry, but unable to hold down the canned food.

I'm so sorry for your kitty @Georgiagrama .  I hope you can get into the Vet early in the morning.  I don't have any advice and hope the kitty is drinking water.

Canned food is pretty rich, it may be too rich for her tummy.

Try moistening some of her kitty kibble with a little warm water, until the vet tomorrow.

See if she can keep that down.

I'm not sure.  We have left her dry food down for her and giving her just a spoonful of the canned food. This has been going on since Thursday night.  We were hoping that may she had just eaten a bug or something like that, and she seemed to have improved Friday, but then Friday night the same thing.  I wasn't home yesterday but my husband was and our Vet wasn't in yesterday. She wants to eat and of course, being a man, if something is hungry all he knows to do is give it food.

That's a good idea.  I think I will try that rather than any more canned food.

Your cat is not in distress.  If it was, she would be pulling her hair/fur out to the point of bald spots.

If you cat is throwing up undigested food make it a point to mention that to the vet.  All it could be is that you have a greedy cat.  You will need to limit the amt of food & put cat on a feeding schedule.

I have an automatic feeder which solved my cats glutton problem.  Also stops cats from waking up you up at all hours of the night cause its hungry.

Throwing up hairballs = normal.  There is an over the counter gel for that=Sentry Petromalt.  During warm/hot months get the cat a lions cut.  No more hairballs!!!!!!

DD has 8 (yes, 8!) indoor kitties and none of them can tolerate canned food, they all throw it up evey time.

It would come in handy when she has to give them meds, but it's just too rich for them to keep it down.
