I am wondering if anyone here makes their own dog food, so many recalls all the time. I was using Natural Balance which is owned by the co with newest recall dog food. I thinking i am going to return it, but not sure what kind to get ? Any ideas of a good dry dog food that hasn't been recalled ? My vet does not like Blue dog food, any ideas would be great.

My vet is very knowledgeable about nutrition and keeps up with what the companies are doing. She like's FROMM'S a lot, which is one of the dry foods we give our dog. We also used to give her Holistic Select, but they changed their formulas and my vet emailed me immediately and told me she wasn't recommending it any longer. There was another dry food she likes, a Canadian brand, but it is ridiculously expensive. Fromm's is not inexpensive either, but a fraction of what the other brand was. We also give her a little Merrick wet food mixed in at night.
Edited to add... Petcurean (their GO line for dogs) is the Canadian company.

@Lostandscared I understand completely. That is why I rely on my vet for a lot of recommendations. Ultimately we decide, but she helps narrow down the choices. We give our Airedale Fromm's Duck & Sweet Potato. I also mix in the Holistic Select, but when that big bag is finished, we are going to get another dry food. We've always blended 2. Good luck in your search.
I get the Fromm's from my vet, and if you sign up on their web site, they send great coupons several times a year. I used to get the Holistic Select from Amazon. Let us know what you decide.
BTW... when my vet let us know about the Holistic Select, she had small sample bags of the other foods she liked. My dog loves everything, but it was nice to let her try it first anyway.

Fromm is a good brand. My dogs also like Merrick and their current favorite is Wellness. Canidae (a Canadian brand) used to be good but lately the bags I've received have a lot of powdery residue in them which I don't appreciate paying for. I complained to the company and was told it's because they don't use binders.

The absolute best dog food you can give your dog, in my opinion, is BIL-JAC dog food sold mostly in Petsmart. Ever since I switched over to this brand my dogs have never had a problem. Their poop is absolutely perfect all the time. My dogs are 11 years old and they are on the adult select variety. The kibbles break apart very easily so any dog of any size can eat this dog food without fear of having any dental issues. The brand is also very health concious when it comes to the ingredients it puts in it's dog food. I have never heard of one negative comment about Bil-jac dog food. And, no, I do not own stock in the company.

@TerBoop Your Bil-Jac is rated in the mid range by Dog Food Advisor. https://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/bil-jac-dog-food/

When we first brought our dog home we purchased a bag of what he was used to but transitioned him to Nature's Domain Grain Free dry dog food, sold at Costco - this is not to be confused with the Kirkland Signature brand also sold at Costco. I've read the Nature's Domain is the same thing as Taste of the Wild but that it's privately labeled for Costco. You can't prove it by me, but our boy is very healthy and has never had a problem with it, and I've never seen a recall on it. The Nature's Domain gets a lot of positive reviews on the Costco and Amazon websites and is rated at 4 stars on the Dog Food Advisor site.

The 3rd ingredient in Bil Jack is Corn Meal, which is filler. However, if your dogs are doing well and youi are happy with the food, then that is what counts.
