propylene glycol used as food preservative

Went to Kroger today, and wanted to buy a bag of shredded coconut, and each brand had the glycol listed as a preservative. I couldn't believe that a chemical that can be found in hair products or anti-freeze can still be found in food products.

Do not be frightened by chemicals. A lot of people make a living trying to frighten consumers because of their ignorance of science and misunderstanding of chemistry (everything you consume is, by definition, a chemical).

Re: propylene glycol used as food preservative

Proplylene glycol is not the same as ethylene glycol (anti-freeze) BUT it is dangerous also. We had to have our little Jack Russell put to sleep a few months ago - why?? it is also FDA approved for animal food/treats. She developed symptoms of diabetes, but was not diabetic...finally she just became so ill and even refused to eat baby food meat. The treats she had were ''made in USA and sourced in USA'', but that was not enough. Her symptoms at the end were the 'list' discovered in many animals ingesting this chemical after a period of time.... so don't just ignore chemicals. As for the coconut, I buy organic unsweetened coconut at Whole Food....and it can be found other places too...The company is: "Let's Do Organic"....there are NO additives/preservatives of any kind.
