Hah! Yeah, Krimpette - I didn't get that part either.

Not knowing better, my immediate thought was that it was some sort of a home shopping party where the guests are "expected" to buy something. Hopefully, that's incorrect.

I agree with Cinder63. She expressed my feelings perfectly. Also, if the hostess lives an hour away from everyone else, she is just making it easy on you since you have to travel so far to enjoy this day. A carpool and going to her house with her planned day sounds great to me. And too many times I have counted on someone to help either with the meal or event and then find they have backed out or do not do their part.

Re: Would this make you uncomfortable?

I would just relax and be grateful that someone is willing to do a great job of it. It wouldn't make me uncomfortable at all. Bottom line is, your BFF will have a wonderful memory of this day, and that's what really counts.

Dumb question: What's a "painting and wine party"?

We have several art studios in our area where individuals or groups can reserve space to have a party with wine and refreshments and do artwork together -- paintings, pottery, jewelry-making, or other art/craft activities, depending on what the facility offers. You pay to use studio space, tools,, and materials. I've done this with one of my daughters and friends several times. It's fun!

I'm guessing this is what OP is talking about.

House Cat, if she's a control freak, and I say this as a semi control freak myself, she has it all planned out in her head already Wink. Your pitching in financially, so it's not like you are being a slug about it. My advice, unless the others gripe about wanting to do more, just go with it.

There are times when you must speak, not because you are going to change the opposing side, but because if you do not speak, they have changed you.

I have to echo Bird mama's feelings regarding this matter. Hopefully, this lady will let others take joy in doing this for your BFF.

Well call me the odd person out but I don't see how just mentioning that we should do something requires recognition. I'd let her do it and not say another word about it. It sounds like she had already put a lot of thought into something for your mutual friend.

Yes. That is what I'm doing Smile

Here's the scoop on the painting part of it. I'm not sure if these parties are popular elsewhere, but it has become trendy to rent an art studio... all supplies are provided and the instructor leads you through creating a painting that is worthy of hanging in your home. They serve wine and other beverages. I don't drink alcohol, so I'm not concerned about that. It will be a fun time for sure.

Re: Would this make you uncomfortable?

Giada De Laurentiis had such a painting party outdoors on one of her shows. What would make me uncomfortable is just the fact that it's your BFF, it was your idea, and now this friend is taking over like it was her idea and the rest of you are just guests at the party. Maybe I'm seeing it wrong but that's how it's looking to me. I hope the birthday girl realizes it wasn't just this other friends idea. She won't even let you bring the CAKE?!
