When they crack, do you throw yours away?

I do, just don't know what could be growing in there and I don't want to put them in a bleach solution.

I never used them on food once they cracked, but I saved them for stirring paint.

That's a good idea, GCR.

I also wouldn't use them in cooking.    The only wooden spoons I have are olive wood and I highly recommend that.   Sure, it's not the cheapest, but if you take care of them (it's pretty easy care!), they will last beautifully forever.

My oldest olive wood spoon is decades old and it's in perfect condition.   It has darkened, but that's just acceptable patina.

Too bad that Chef's Catalog is gone.  I got some positively stunning olive wood spoons, and such, there that I absolutely love.

Oh my, I never even thought of anything growing in the cracks.

So, ah, I guess my answer is "no".  I just wash them and keep going.

Wooden spoons are just as safe as wooden cutting boards which are as safe (if not safer) than plastic.

If there are major cracks which allow food to get trapped, perhaps they should be discarded.  I, personally, run my wooden spoons right through the dishwasher (including the olive wood ones) with no problems, but I also oil them all a least once a month with mineal oil.

If you like using wooden spoons, you can prevent them from cracking by seasoning them frequently.  I use cuttingboard oil which is a food grade mineral oil.  Purchased it at the hardware store.  Works well.

This probably contributes to the reason none of mine have ever cracked.  Every time I use one, after washing and drying, I treat them.  I like the Boos brand cream and oil.  The cream is awesome.

Always best, as you do, to use FOOD GRADE oil.  Smiley Happy

I had one spoon crack.  I saved it to use for gardening (indoor plants).

I never thought about seasoning my wooden spoons.  Thanks for the tip!
