Re: What's Cooking in June 2018 - almost let it get by me - - - - -

This weather is insane. Froze yesterday morning  - am doing the same now. After having 100 degree days for a spell, something happened. I had already shut down the heater - so it is not worth the effort to clean it, re-light the pilot, etc. Will just shiver I guess. At least yesterday wound up being a super good day - never got hot but did get very comfy.

Ate at Bob's Big Boy - love their food. When they closed them all down some years back, the first one the opened again was right here - and we are a super small town but it stays packed at any time of the day. Not sure where there are others. Mother  would be so happy to have had it when she was still with us - I use to take her to Redlands every Sunday so she could eat there. Bless her.

Glad all had a good Father;'s Day - Pooky1, you made a good decision to cook that stuff the night before. Humidity is awful. Have a great day everyone!

Re: What's Cooking in June 2018 - almost let it get by me - - - - -

I made the cake last night, and though good, I consider it a breakfast/brunch type of cake, moist on the inside, and a nice crust on the outside.  I prefer uncooked strawberries.  I made a strawberry bundt cake once, DD and DH loved it, I didn't.  This cake is better.  I may have mentioned this recently, but I copied several strawberry cake recipes last week, so am planning, throughout the summer. to make each of them, some with frosting, filling, etc., so will post my opinion afterward.

For some reason, I thought I read two sticks of butter, and 1/4 cup of melted butter.  After the cake was in the oven for a few minutes, I saw the butter, and was so upset, so was DH, lol.  I then realized that I had forgotten to sprinkle a tablespoon of sugar over the top, so did that.  I read the recipe again and saw that two sticks of butter were not in it, so a big sigh of relief, I did it correctly afterall, so we had a good laugh.

DH made mini corn meal muffins, so yesterday was highly unusual, those for breakfast, then the cake later on, not eating much today, lol.

@Pooky1  Your Father's Day dinner sounds wonderful.  DH worked in the garden for me, digging big holes to plant shrubs, lol, but he was fed well at dinner.

All Bob's Big Boys are gone in Az. I liked that place. Do they still have Bob's statue in the front?  I remember teens would steal the statue all the time as a joke. We had another place called Coco's (something like Bob's) and we only have 1 left now.

Yes they still have the statue out front - in fact they have two, one is inside now. The original one disappeared and was gone a couple of years. And of course it was located in the back yard of a teenager - what got me is they did not do anything to him or his family for having it there several years. Just never seemed right to me. The one out front now has locks and alarms so do not believe it could get stolen again. LOL. You really cannot spot the locks well at all - that is good. It has been back here for some years now - sure am glad. Have not seen any others but understand there are still a few that have returned. Like most restaurants however, they have gotten a bit pricey. So many restaurants have closed in the past year and/or close after lunch - hard to find a good place these days.

Need to get a move on - have NO clue what is for dinner tonight - will figure out something.

Have a great day one and all.

good afternoon everyone. winifred. i can remember going to a bobs big boy in the early 1990s. there was a big statue of a boy infront. i think it had alot of white on it and they had  really good breakfast buffet. it hasnt been around for alot of years . does this sound like what you have ?  bright and sunny and in the 80s here in ri. put up out intex pool the other day but it isnt level so were draining to move it. we now instead of having our big meal at night. were having it like 1230 and having something light at night. maria marinated pork yestauday and i grilled it for lunch today with baked potato and stuffed eggplant. the marinate she used was so good and had a very fresh flavor. it has olive oil fresh garlick wostershire sauce parsley and other things. hope everyone has a great week.

@Pooky1-------many, many years ago I took a summer trip to the Deep South to meet extended family for the first time. Every household was over 60 and had routines that I loved.

Get up in the morning, straighten up with light housekeeping, laundry and errands......then start preparing the big meal of the day to be served at 12:30. The afternoon would be spent on various lay back activities and, if needed, a trip to the market and then "supper" would be something light or sandwiches from leftover "big meal" meat or salads, etc.

For all the years afterwards, I told my DH that I would love to live that way but schedules made it impossible.

The marinated pork sounds mouthwatering.......tonight I am having leftover

Japanese food....Shrimp and vegetables tempura with white rice. Went out to late lunch on Saturday and brought half home..

I remember Ted's Big Boy with the statue of the boy with checkered shorts and holding a burger.....I can't remember where it was...maybe on the Louisquisset Pike at the entrance to Woonsocket ?

Will all three of you use the pool ? How deep is it and do you need a filter ?

@Danky  It was Bob's Big Boy, in the part of California that I grew up in, that looked as your described.

danky. pool is 10 feet across and 30 inches deep. and yes there is a filter. maria and i will go in pool and  maria watches a 7 year old boy he and annas grand children will use pool also. anna hates water so no pool for her. im allways telling her im going to buy her a bikini to go in pool with. the best way to describe the marinate she made is fresh. how i would describe it it would be good with chicken steak allso. i anyone wants the complete recipe for it i can get it from maria. danky your food you had sounds really good. thinking of want you had is making me hungry.

@Pooky1-------I would love the recipe for the marinade if it is not too much trouble.....You are a funny guy....Anna must think it hysterical when you threaten to buy her a bikini...make sure it is black out of respect for her mourning. Are you all doing okay since his death ?

The pool sounds perfect for your needs..course more work for you guys but worth it when it is a really hot day.

How anyone can live so close to the Narragansett Bay and hate water is beyond me. I grew up on the water and, to this day, the ocean is my favorite place to be.......nothing beats the smell, taste and feel of salt water......

I love pools, too, but kinda miss the jellyfish and seaweed !

Re: What's Cooking in June 2018 - almost let it get by me - - - - -

Yes Pooky1, that was Bob's Big Boy. I never understood why they all shut down and did it so quickly - no warning at all - they were everywhere. Food is so very good and they still offer a buffet if you prefer that. That has changed a bit as the afternoon and evening buffet is no big deal - breakfast is still a big deal. I always loved the lunch or dinner buffet but just not worth the price now and the food is very limited - no main courses at all except their delicious creamed soups - mostly salad material only now. But like I said, breakfast is still a big deal buffet style - they have everything.

Got a bit toasty yesterday and today it is suppose to get even warmer. I am sitting here right now sneezing - the chill got to me but never fear it will disappear soon.

Kids got to sleep about `10 last night - cannot figure out why they both started going to sleep so much later as both use to crash around 8 - wish I could get them back in the habit but think I have it figured out to when they are staying with someone else on occasion, they have NO curfew - a BIG mistake in my book.

Hope all have a great day.
