Re: Tired of broken up, frozen pie crust from the store? Make your own. I will not buy another frozen crust.

Pamelasue72, would you please post the recipe for your piecrust...I have a similar recipe but have lost it. Love the way it turns out every time. Since the pie making season is upon us I would love to have that recipe back again. Thank you so much.

I just can't eat those store bought crusts having grown up on my grandmas recipe handed down to my mom and then to me.

This is my grandmothers recipe

  • 2 1/3 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 ½ stick butter, cold
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ÂĽ cup lard or shortening, cold
  • 1 tablespoon white vingar
  • 6 tablespoons ice water

after I saw Ina Garten use a frozen crust to make a pie, I will keep using them too.....I also think the Betty Crocker pie crust mix is outstanding...far better than frozen but still requires rolling and mixing.

Sure! Here you go:

My mother-in-law gave me this recipe and I've used it for years. It's very easy and I don't have any problems with it. When I was making 20 peach or apple pies at a time, I used to triple or even quadruple the recipe.

Pie Crust

5 cups flour

1 teaspoon salt

2 cups shortening

1 tablespoon vinegar

1 egg

Ice-cold water

Combine flour and salt; cut in shortening to make crumbs. Chill crumbs overnight.

The next day, beat the egg in a one-cup measuring cup. Add vinegar, then fill with ice-cold water to make one cup. Add to crumbs and combine thoroughly. Roll out dough for pies.

This recipe should make 6-7 pie crusts.

Thanks for this recipe (and the others here) and the nudge I need to start making my own crust. I cook and bake and have for many years and piec crust is the one thing I've never made. I just always grab those ones in the dairy aisle, which are just fine. But I'd like to try making my own. I know it's easy. Just haven't made it happen. Thanks!

I just use the frozen & they are fine, but my friend always makes her own and told me that ice water is the key to a good flaky crust.

Pamela, thank you for posting your recipe. I have valiantly trying to make pie crust for a long time: I always knew the butter and shortening had to be ice cold, as does the water....but I never thought about refrigeration the crumbs or "peas" as some chefs call them....now I am realizing where my problem was!!!! My dough would soften, and I would add more flour, and to make a long story short, my crust was not so great. Next time, I will refrigerate the "crumbs" overnight. Poodlepet

I wouldn't, Bisquick has baking powder and buttermilk in it.

There are recipes for Impossible Pies that use Bisquick. I have 2 Bisquick Cookbooks.

I just found a recipe on line too! Bisquick doesn't sound like it would work for dessert pies- but I'm looking to make quiche.

Here are the only two sites you need to make perfect, flaky pie crusts. Both sites have photos. If the links don't post correctly, just copy and paste in your browser address bar.
