Thermapen have a great reputation, but there's a ton of competiton out there now with digital thermometers at great prices with great reviews. For as little as $7 (Anpro DT-10) you can get devices with similar capabilities. If you really want the folding design then you can look at a Lavatools PT-12 for $25. It gives a reading accurate to nine tenths of a degree in three to four seconds and comes with a lifetime warranty. A company called Adoric makes a folding digital thermometer accurate to within one degree with a read time of 2-3 seconds for $10.99 that gets great reviews.

There are a lot of good options out there that cost a lot less than a Thermapen, Owning a Thermapen may impress your foodie friends, but a thermometer is a thermometer as long as it's accurate. Your food won't know the difference and neither will those eating it.

The issue isn't just capability but more importantly quality, accuracy and longevity.

Agreed. But when you read the reviews you start to find that there are a lot of well made, accurate and long lived alternatives. Some even with lifetime warranties. (Granted lifetime warranties aren't always so good as they typically require multiple hurdles to be jumped through, but still it's a lifetime warranty.) You can find many lower cost alternatives to the Thermapen with rave reviews though and it's important for people to know that. I'm not saying anyone shouldn't buy a Thermapen, but it's smart to look at all of the options.

I used lots of different thermometers before I bought a thermapen. My only regret buying one is that I didn't buy it sooner. And the thermopop is 29 dollars, hardly expensive. Although it wasn't out when I bought my Classic.

@gardenman Thx for the info. Since I already bought the Thermapen doubt I will need a new one any time soon. All I know is it's nice having something be done like the thermometer states intead of wondering is it done.

Thermapen won't impress any of my friends because none of them would know what it is. LOL!!! Most people I know don't cook much.
