Sweat potato vs Yam?

This question probably has been posted before but here it is again. What is the difference between the two? I know the sweat potato is lighter in color than the yam.......Does it matter in a sweat potato pie recipe? I want to bake my first one this Christmas with a ham.

Any good sweat potato recipes?
