I love Lock and Lock. I have a cabinet full and give it as gifts. About a year or so I gave several family members the tall clear item that fits the 4 sleeves of saltine crackers. Here is what happened.

I was at my son's and when I got out his crackers I noticed a strong rancid smell. He is a bachelor so my comment was "How long have these been in your cabinet." His comment was "well not long because I got them few months ago when I had the flu." I didn't think anything else about this until I was talking to my sis.

She said "Have you ever had crackers go bad?" Said that she was making meat loaf and reached for the crackers and noticed a strong spoiled smell. I told her what had happened at my son's with the crackers being spoiled.

We think that the L&L plastic is transferring fumes to the food--in this case the crackers. Has anyone else noticed rancid odors from dry foods that have been stored in L&L?

Re: Spoilage in Lock and Lock?

Never had this happen although I take the top tab with the freshness date stamp (use by) and always put down side of container.  I tend to forget when I purchase things and how long I've had them, this is a good freshness reminder for me.

I've never had that experience, & I use the canisters for pasta, dried beans, etc.  I run all of my L&L through the dishwasher before using.

Re: Spoilage in Lock and Lock?

Nope. I've not had that trouble with Lock and Lock  but a good point has been brought up.  I hand wash the pieces when I get them and it does feel like they are coated with a thin sheen of an oily substance when I wash them.  Something to keep them supple  and retard picking up other odors while in transport to and storage at the warehouse i suppose.  L+L says to wash before using and I think it is to remove this film more than just any dust it has collected.  I hope those pieces can still be used for something. They sound like a nifty size.

Re: Spoilage in Lock and Lock?

I haven't had anything go rancid....however I did have some sleeves of crackers in one...a time ago...and they did get stale..my fault...I forgot to put the stale date with them...and I don't use crackers all that often...I just tossed them....

I didn't know crackers could go bad.  Stale yes.

That was what was so strange. I was talking to my sis and in the conversation she said "have you ever had crackers go bad?" Yes, they get stale but she described the smell that I had noticed at my son's house. I think the washing might be the answer because I use them for other dry items such as cereal and never had a problem. Just odd

Anything with any type of fat can go rancid..crackers, beings made with shortening, are no exception..this is why you keep brown rice nd nuts in the fridge or freezer.. Even flour contains some  fat and can go rancid, though not as quickly as Bisquick, which has a lot of fat...

rancidity is the natural end result of the breakdown of fats....obviously there are things one can do to retard the process, but the result is, frankly, inevitable given time and condition...

Re: Spoilage in Lock and Lock?

Nope. I've used L&L for years for all kinds of food storage. I've noticed any fumes of anything. The plastic is polypropylene. It's perfectly safe.

The only possible potential problem from fumes would be if you were to set it on fire and burn it.
