So good! My dad was the primary grocery shopper and would buy the cakes when they were on sale.

I remember seeing it in the store. My mother made something like it, so we never had the bought version.

A supermarket in my area makes a lighter version of the cake, with cream cheese frosting. They call it Italian Wedding Cake. It's so good.

Re: Spanish Bar Cake

[ Edited ]

Wow, I do remember these from A & P store. The cake is very similar in recipe to my GrandMother's poorman's cake. She used to add Molasses  to the recipe .She said it was made alot during the Depression . Below is a link to a recipe

I remember this cake very fondly!  It was my dear father's favorite cake!  When he and my mother used to go food shopping on their pay day, they would shop at the Acme food store.  My father always and I mean, always, picked up the Spanish Bar Cake!  I can still see it, smell it and taste it!  I wish they still sold it today!  I remember him cutting a thin slice of it to have with his coffee, and a big smile on his face!

I also remember spanish bar sold at the A&P.  My local grocery store bakery makes it and it is so good.

It certainly sounds familiar.
