Was at Sam's Club Mon. They had a 16 piece of either blue or orange melamine dishes for 30.00   I said "whoa ! that's a good deal", then, I looked  you can't put in dishwasher (top shelf, how you getting plates up there ) and you can't put in microwave.

No melamine is microwave safe.

And as to the dishwasher, many things now are stating 'top rack' as the safe place. I guess the dishwashers have gotten too hot and too powerful for many things. I don't have one (or want one) so hand washing wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

No cups or mugs either.  I was tempted till I realized that.  I am noticing lots of dish sets no longer have mugs.  I don't want to have to search for coordinating mugs.

I thought they had cups in there. 16 pieces. I'd better look it up.

That made me laugh. I see the craziest things marked "Dishwasher safe top shelf only" and thought this same thing. How are you getting a water bottle in the top shelf? Sideways, so that the inside doesn't actually get washed? What's the point of that? Crazy.

I bought the Melamine 10 pc bowl with lids they have for $16 free shipping. They are also top rack safe. I don't put stuff like this in the dishwasher anyways. For the most part we don't use it much since it's just the 2 of us.

I like Melamine or Corelle since they are light weight. I got rid of all my heavy dishes.

Costco had a pretty set too, in two different colors.  I know someone in the house would eventually put it in the microwave, so it's a big no. Even though I have a dishwasher, it's mostly used as a drip dry rack, so top rack wouldn't bother me.

I almost gave in once to melamine or Texasware, whatever they call it these days. It was in the Lenox Butterfly Meadow line, you couldn't really tell the difference except in weight if you weren't paying attention. Can't imagine the mess if used in the microwave accidently.

Me too. Corelle from walmart is my choice over Fiesta ware. Don't like JC Penny's stuff either. Chip and break and heavy. I'm all practical.

I can.   LOL  my top rack raises and lowers.   Never use it tho.  Plastic gets washed by hand.

I have fears about using melamine.  Don't trust the chemcial composition.
