@loriqvc @qualityshopper Wow Loriqvc, thanks for providing the visual.
Maybe a lobster or nut cracker could get a good grip on that round cover to wrench that bad baby off!
Making a mental note to never purchase this brand online but only in a store where I can see it and avoid qualityshopper's aggravation.

@aroc3435 - Oxo Good Grips is actually an excellent brand for most kitchen items; it's typically the recommendation of America's Test Kitchen in virtually every category, and I own many great gadgets and containers from Oxo. In searching for that paring knife (which I'm only guessing is the one referred to by the OP based on the odd design), it appears that it's the only one in the Oxo line with a sheath, so the other Oxo knives are likely just fine.

Thanks everyone for responding. Some of you mentioned the possibility of it being a sheath, but that's not what it was. The size of it was similar to the picture that HEDGE posted, but not quite. Whereas the handle to this knife is black, this piece of plastic was white and wasn't attached to the handle. My cousin was going to take a look at it Monday, but meanwhile, I decided it wasn't going to get the better of me. So, since scissors couldn't cut through it, I decided to go looking in the tool box. I remembered we had some wire cutters in there (think that's what they're called) and managed to remove the thing. Can't wait until Tuesday to call Oxo to find out what its purpose was because I truly can't think what it could be--especially when washing it because I could see that water would get between it and the blade and be trapped. I'll post what they have to say on Tues.

@qualityshopper re the picture I posted, that 'thing' had two purposes.
First was to keep your hand behind the blade.
I am constantly handling just washed veg and yes, my wet hand has 'slipped' toward the blade.
Second propose was that when you set it down, it 'rested' with the blade up, off the cutting surface.

Just posting an update as promised. Called Oxo today and the lady I spoke to had no idea what the purpose of this plastic thing was. She was completely unaware of any of their knives having this. Guess it'll have to remain a mystery.
Oh, well. Other problems to deal with right now anyway--NO WATER! We live in Dayton where we had tornadoes last night. Fortunately no damage to property, but the water plants lost power, so those who still have water have to boil it. Others like us have absolutely nothing. Obviously I should have had a stockpile of bottled water.
