Re: Please help-----which dishwasher do I buy?

On 3/10/2014 mollysmama said: Deepa, we just went thru this several months ago! First off, buy stainless. We fell for the plastic spiel, and the dishes don't dry all the way!!! Second, my control buttons are on the top edge of my dishwasher now - SO STUPID. I can't see where in the cycle the dishwasher is in!! I can't even tell if it's finished!! We also went by Comsumer Reports. This is the Kenmore Elite. I hate this thing so much, we called Sears back our here. The service guy admitted that he doesn't even know which brand he'd buy now (he said they're all made by just a few companies), and he's worked for Sears since 1976. His only helpful tip was make sure your water temp is set to 140 degrees, and use powder, not the premeasured soap pods. Good luck!
We bought the highest rated (by Consumer's magazine) Kenmore 4 or 5 years ago, and I'd rather go to the back yard and beat my dishes against a rock in the brook than use it. It does an absolutely great job of washing designs off glassware, but when confronted by FOOD on dishes, it creates little modernistic sculptures that it glues to each dish or utensil as though it's using super glue. If you choose to wash your dishes in hot soapy water before loading them, it does do a great job. NEVER AGAIN! I do subscribe to CR Magazine, but I take its opinions with a grain of salt.

Violann, I'm laughing so hard over your poetic description of your dishwasher, I'm crying! Have you ever heard of this web-site called "Dog Shaming"? (It's cute and if you want to smile, a visit is in order). Well, I think you need to start a new site called "Appliance Rant"!{#emotions_dlg.lol}Have a great day in spite of your dish washer....

Re: Please help-----which dishwasher do I buy?

About 4 years ago, my gas oven stopped getting hot. I immediately thought, "Oh, that stove must be 30 years old-time for a new one.'. I tried to read reviews, asked people, went shopping. I couldn't believe the prices, the cheap construction, and the over-reliance on digital controls. I had my old stove repaired for much less than buying new, and am very happy with my decision.

Then, my old gas dryer broke down, (after 17? years). I fixed it this time myself, from info on the internet.

My appliances might look dated, but they last. They are actually designed to be repaired, rather than replaced. Next time something goes on the blink, I'm going to do another cheap fix and keep it.

Love my KitchenAid, very quiet and does an excellent job cleaning. Previously had a GE and it did a great job for many years. Decided against Bosch, because although they are very quiet, the interior of the dw is so small you'd be running it all the time. Compare the interior to another brand and you'll be amazed at how small the Bosch is.

Re: Please help-----which dishwasher do I buy?

One of the reasons we decided on the Kitchen Aid versus the Bosch is that our repairman told us hate working on them because they have to be pulled out away from the space that they are in and totally inverted to work on and most people do not have the space to do this. He also told us not to purchase a Bosch because they do not do a very good dry of drying the dishes due to not having a heater. He also said they are highly over priced. He also owns the store where we purchase our appliances at. The store is family owned and run and we always ask for their advice and opinions because they do the repairs also. Our neighbors house was built one year after ours was built and she too has replaced her GE dishwasher. They just do not make them like they used to. Like someone said on here they are made to be disposable now.

My husband sells appliances and Bosch is what he highly recommends. It's what we have too with the stainless interior.

Love my Bosch that I got last year. Not having a heated dry cycle is not an issue and I don't have to worry about plastic containers melting. There are a number of web forums out there that discuss various appliances. I try to read several and look for common complaints about a particular brand. I know that some swear by CR, but after purchasing 3 different large and small appliances based on CR ratings and all three being junk, I cancelled my subscription (no easy task) and don't bother reading their reviews. Good luck, but I will say what several have already said...appliances are no longer built to last, they are meant to be disposable.

RocketMom, when we bought our Bosch, it was in part due to CR's recommendation. It didn't work out for us, as I posted earlier (although I agree with you about the drying mechanism).

We purchased our current Kenmore Elite dishwasher also in part to to CR's recommendation (about a year or so ago) and absolutely love it.

I don't blame CR because I know how they rate and test products. But they don't have control over the snafus that can happen in terms of possible individual defects, and they most certainly don't have control over individual preferences.

Another case in point: CR has always rated Hoover Windtunnel vacs as superior. We hated ours. They do not like Sebo vacuums, and you couldn't pry ours from our dead hands.

Still, I do like CR as one resource among many.

Re: Please help-----which dishwasher do I buy?

I just bought a stainless Frigidaire three months ago. It's their super quiet, higher end model, and it has been perfect in every way. Two things new to me compared to my old dishwasher - it's recommended that you use these little cleanser pods rather than powder detergent, and a normal cycle runs about 1-1/2 hrs. I was shocked at that time frame, but from what I understand, the newer technology provides more efficiency for longer lengths of time. The first time I ran it, I actually thought something was wrong with it because it was so quiet that I couldn't hear it running. LOL

Re: Please help-----which dishwasher do I buy?

We purchased a German-made Miele last year and I absolutely adore it. Stainless steel interior and third utensil rack on top. When the salesman was showing us the various models, he was raving about that third rack and I kept thinking "I certainly don't need that." Then we looked around town at models that didn't have that, and then I was convinced that I DO NEED THAT! You have to one-by-one line up your silverware, but when you go to unload the washer you can scoop up all the forks at once, etc.
