Re: OT and Just wondering : Do you know how to speak another language?

Mine was the last class to be offered Latin at school (but, back then, dinosaurs roamed the Earth). We had to fight for it in our year, and the teacher retired when we graduated, so it wasn't offered again.

I agree with sfnative, it's extremely useful if you want to do anything medical; there are so many abbreviations that only make sense if you know the Latin behind them.

I was in healthcare, not law, but I would expect law students would find Latin helpful too.

Yes, I speak Italian, German, and Spanish. I also studied four years of Russian in college.

I've also recently started learning Portuguese online...I've always loved that language.

Me too! I also speak fluent Greek!

Not sure if you're being facetious or not...

I grew up speaking English and Italian. I learned Spanish and German in school. I have a graduate degree in translation/interpretation. My three languages were English, German, Spanish.

Any job I've gotten has been because of my language ability, especially Spanish.

I love languages; they are a hobby for me. I also like to study and learn about regional dialects, in this country as well as abroad.

I can speak traditional Greek and a few other Greek dialects from some Greek islands, as well as the English language too.

Re: OT and Just wondering : Do you know how to speak another language?

I took 9 years of French in school, and by my senior year in high school was reading books and writing book reports - even dreaming in French! Loved it! Unfortunately unless you use it, you loose it! I went to France a few years ago, and I could still understand a lot, but I some had trouble with speaking. My DH is fluent - which comes in handy where we live in Florida where there is a large Haitian community.

This thread got me interested in dusting off my German. I found a FREE site - Duolingo - to practice.

You take a test first and then they determine where you commence your lessons.

My German spelling is TERRIBLE!

Check out Deutsche Welle site. They have some good language learning tools.

"Me hablo espanol un poco". (I speak a little Spanish). But my computer doesn't do the 'squiggly' over the n, LOL.

That is appalling. {#emotions_dlg.sad}

"Yo hablo espanol un po." With the tilde.

I was born/raised in Latin America - speak fluent Spanish/English, pretty good at French and understand Italian and bit of Portuguese!! Actually it is - "Hablo un poco Español"...

Not according to the person who taught me Spanish. Wink Languages aren't spoken they way they appear in dictionaries.

No one here mentioned any of the Asian languages. Try to get a job -- they need people who speak Korean, Japanese, and Mandarin.

Re: OT and Just wondering : Do you know how to speak another language?

My grandparents were born in Italy but they did speak English. There were times when my parents would speak Italian to their parents or friends of my grandparents so hearing this frequently and then taking Spanish in high school did help me when I married my husband and his parents did not speak English to well. I was also accustomed to the Sicilian dialect.
