I speak French and German.I took both in college and then continued some classes after college. I try to read on my kindle in both languages and listen to books and other things in both. I write emails in French to friends who speak French. I also try to think things in both. I like to watch movies in English and put on the subtitles in these or listen in the languages if it's available.I am currently watching Ray Donovan in French ...already watched in English.Another show in French is The Returned..subtitled in English.I don't get as much German but books are easier to get. I am pretty quick at remembering vocabulary. I want to learn Spanish.

My first language was German too. My father and my Oma came here from Germany after WWII, my Opa was here since 1922 (and went back to see them regularly).

My dad has been long gone and I can now read German a LOT better than speaking it - past the usual small talk and phrases.

I took German in high school and college (also dated an exchange student from Germany for 5 years) and my son did too - we got straight A's.

A friend belongs to a "French" club. They are all SAH moms and all taught themselves to speak & read in French and teach their kids too. They read one book a month and then have "club" to discuss it - entirely in French. After several years, they all went to France with their husbands - 6 couples in all.

I was raised in South America and thought I could speak Spanish until a couple of years ago when I went to Spain. Boy do they do it differently, sounded like a lisp to me. And a child's vocabulary doesn't work in a bar...just saying.

I studied French for 2 years. I live in "Cajun Country" , which has a heavy French influence, so it's commonly spoken here. Now this is fun...I can't speak the language, but I know some Hawaiian words from when I loved there...that's a fun language. But I would love to learn Latin and German

I took 5 years of French in school because my mother thought it sounded pretty. She was English. French would have been more useful to me if we lived in Europe. Now looking back I wish I had taken Spanish, that would definitely be more useful.

I speak Spanish and German. The Spanish came to me way back when I was in the 6th grade. KQED, the PBS channel 9 in San Francisco, had chosen my grammar school for a pilot program of teaching audio-lingual Spanish 3 days a week via TV to ten chosen kids in my 6th grade class. The other two days we were taught and followed up on the KQED lesson plans by our principal, who spoke fluent Spanish. By the end of that school year, the ten of us had a good handle on basic Spanish, accent and how to converse one-on-one. The next year we graduated into Junior Hi where they created a special Spanish class for us, so that we could continue to learn where we left off at the end of the 6th grade. I continued to take spanish for a total of 7 years.

When DH and I planned our first trip to Germany, I realized that the German I had on board was based on songs and motets I had sung in German, so signed up for a college level course. Did pretty well once we got to Germany and much of what I'm learned has stayed with me, as DH and I will talk to each other on occasion in German.

I also learned a great deal of Latin and Italian through singing. The Latin has really stayed with me and was a blessing when I entered the medical profession.

DD also took 7 years of Spanish and occasionally uses it in her job. When DD and I are in the kitchen during holidays or special occasions and are prepping and cooking, we always speak Spanish only, which helps both of us to retain some of the more less used words in our world.
