Re: New to Temp-tations, concerned about quality issues...question for long-time users of TT.

I would rather pay a little more and buy quality pieces in a different line than start a collection that you could have problems and disappointment with down the road.

All stonewear is recommended to start in a cold oven. Stonewear is porous under the glaze, and it will crack if you put a cold dish into a hot oven. also, the dish needs to be full- like a casserole, or mac & cheese. NOT a roast or a piece of fish.

If you take a stonewear pan out of the oven, and set it on a cold or wet surface, it will crack or break into pieces. That is what the trivets that come with TempTations are for. A pot holder that is damp will crack your stonewear instantly.

DO NOT soak stonewear. The water will seep in through the bottonm of the piece. I do not wash mine in the dishwasher, either. I wash and dry it by hand.

I have had a number of TT sets and use them daily. Most of my pieces are over 10 years old. The only one I have ever broken was a dish I dropped on the floor while drying it.

Stonewear if more fragile than other cookware. You have to baby it. My mom used some type of German stonewear, and I learned how to treat it from her.

Temptations is an inexpensive stonewear collection. I am actually amazed at how well it has held up for me. The price per piece if you purchase a complete set is a few dollars. IMHO, it is a good deal if you take the extra time to care for it .

I agree! I wish they would put in the instructions that the bakers need to be full. I have had the larger pieces get the dark water lines and I knew breaking would be next. My pieces were replaced and now I know better. Both times when I had problems the bakers were not full. The lid-it's...forget about putting those in the oven. I just use those to serve and cover.

Also, want to mention to you Sheryl72 that I have 5 tt sets I have bought in the last 5 years. I love the way it looks and really enjoy using it. I would say give it a try and see what you think. Yes, there are problems they need to fix, but people are still buying and loving. I think the new round set with the lid-its is a great place to start. You can do a ton with those pieces. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

May depend on how you use them - on air recently, when a viewer complained of cracking, David Venable said you have to put the bakeware in a cold oven to start with, not pre-heated. What this does to some recipes I don't know!

Although this may seem strange, most modern ovens preheat very quickly- I remember when they used to take 20 minutes or more! I think he was stressing that you don't want extreme changes in temperature in stoneware- If you fill up your casserole dish with warm mac and cheese and are just heating it to melt the cheese and crumbs on the top, sure, put it in a hot oven- but if you are taking a stone cold frozen lasagna out of the freezer to bake ,then please start in a cold oven... I even do this with Pyrex, corningware and Le Creuset...

Re: New to Temp-tations, concerned about quality issues...question for long-time users of TT.

I bought a lot of Temptations in the past but I'd never buy it again. Not only did someone in another thread post that they're not safe, but I received pieces that were chipped. Customer Service at Temptations quickly replaced the pieces with more chipped pieces. When I notified them again, they became very nasty. I agree you might want to try some Fiestaware instead, it's very nice and made in the USA.

Re: New to Temp-tations, concerned about quality issues...question for long-time users of TT.

I agree with those who recommend choosing a good quality brand over this stuff. Furthermore, good quality stoneware and ceramics can go into a preheated oven without ever having problems.

I would never put Chinese-made stoneware into a heat source unless it comes from a very integrous company, which Temptations is NOT.

There are so many great companies out there and I'd add that their products are a zillion times more aesthetically appealing than this stuff. I find the TT designs to be profoundly unappealing. YMMV of course, as we all like different stuff. Smiley Happy Choices are good, but I would not consider these products a good choice by any stretch.

Re: New to Temp-tations, concerned about quality issues...question for long-time users of TT.

Someone here mentioned that temp-tations stoneware is porous.

I saved this question and answer from Homer Laughlin's facebook page, and it helps in understanding the reason why fiesta is so durable.

Facebook post:

"I have a question.... I work for Dillards and every now and then customers ask us this and we don't know the exact answer.... WHAT IS IT that makes fiesta so durable and not so easy to chip??? They say if they go to get dinnerware in a different brand it chips within a few days but what cause Fiesta to hold up so well for years?

Homer Laughlin China Hi Amber, This is a great question. Essentially, the superior design and composition of our dinnerware is what makes it so durable. Our products are vitrified, which makes them stronger and more chip resistant than semi-vitrified ware, which is more porous and potentially more unsanitary. In addition, we formulate the body of our ware using Alumina to increase strength. Finally, the design and careful finishing of the edge, a crucial step in ensuring optimum chip resistance, further contribute to the strength of our dinnerware."

There are so many colors, so many different pieces, fiesta has something for everyone. It is fun to collect. Made in USA. And it is beautiful!

Glad to see many "long time" lovers of Temp-tations responding to the OP's question!

I also have many sets of TT and so far have never had any kind of problems with any piece! Percentage wise, there haven't been as many "problems" as it seems compared with the the amount of TT sold(how many--11 million & counting?) so there are bound to be problems. NO line of stoneware in 100% free of problems! Like some others have stated, it is an inexpensive line of stoneware compared to others and mine have paid for themself since I do use different bakeware every week and some many times a week. I use my TT like any other bakeware, no cold oven & also have put it in the dishwasher.

I have all that I need now but always keep my eyes open for anything new!!

Re: New to Temp-tations, concerned about quality issues...question for long-time users of TT.

I really enjoy mine. Haven't had the problems that some others have mentioned. I realized when I started buying them that they were not an expensive stoneware. I use them and enjoy them and like the ability to have several sets and change them everyday. My kids love that I do this. It makes everyone smile when they walk through the dinning room and that's what it's all about for me. I am careful with mine but they go in the dishwasher and I have never put them in a cold oven. I've used mine like any other dish but my kids don't handle them and I take care of them. I'm happy with mine and they are beautiful dishes and everyone in my family loves the way my dinning room table looks. They enjoy them also.

Re: New to Temp-tations, concerned about quality issues...question for long-time users of TT.

You asked for responses from longtime Temp-tations users who haven't had problems with chips or cracks. I have bakeware, cannisters, bowls, travel mugs, platters and I have not had a problem with them. I use the 9 x 13 and loaf pans a lot and always get nice comments on the things I bring to church potlucks or when it's my turn to serve coffee and refreshments. They are beautiful to use and have served me well.
