Is it just me?
I have tried several grocery packaged ground beef. I've tried 93-7 up to 80-20. Then I tried getting the fresh ground beef at the counter. The closest to good has been the patties that combine short ribs or brisket.
All my life I have taken a package of ground beef, made patties- a little salt/pepper and they always had taste and juciey-ness. Now, If I brown beef for chile, I get watery stuff and not greese. It seems my sources have some sort of filler or foreign animal parts!

We have King Soopers here in Denver (Kroger) and their meat isn't the greatest.
We also have Safeway and their hamburger is good.
Supposedly the King Soopers meat is frozen, Safeway fresh.

@rockygems123 Properly frozen good quality ground been shouldn't be hurt by freezing. My dad raised cattle and I've cooked and eaten who knows how much in my first 45 years.
Ground beef should be as good as any beef. If it is watery and tastless, I'd try buying somewhere else. If that fails, grind your own from better cuts. It's easy to do with a kitchenaid attachment grinder or even in a food processor with a few pulses.

The most flavorful meat has fat in it. When you buy meat with a small amount of fat, it lacks flavor and is usually dry.
Just buy meat with more fat and drain it off after cooking it. You might want to use a few ounces more to allow for shrinkage.
Some packaged ground beef has that " pink slime." I don't want that type of cheap filler. Just make sure you buy quality...costs a little more, but is worth it.

I always buy my meats at a local butcher shop. If you don't have one anywhere around you then go to Whole Foods or any organic market. Yes, you will pay more but you will get very good quality meat. I don't mind spending more on quality meats, if I'm going to take the time to cook it's going to be good! I have found the same issue with chicken over the years.

@granddi I doubt that your supermarket ground beef has filler in it, but ours sure doesn't have a lot of flavor. We have been on a quest for better tasting beef for several years. We finally realized we had to buy locally grown, grass fed beef to get beef that wasn't bland. We don't buy steaks very often, and we sometimes buy ground beef. When making chili or other beef soups/stews, we use the supermarket beef. The additional veggies and seasonings give the dish the flavor it needs. Frankly, I prefer deer meat.

US Certified Beef used to have such excellent flavor. Salt and pepper was iall that it needed. Many beefs are no longer labeled as that.
I have to agree with you the beef does not have the same quality that it used to.

@granddi. Iv3 noticed nothing tastes as good to me as it used to. I think as one ages the taste sensation decreases. I've lot weight the past couple of years and haven't been trying. It's just that nothing tastes good anymore.

I have found the BEST meat comes from Pat LaFrieda...a company in North Bergen N.J. Expensive but SO worth it since it tastes like Beef. I live in Virginia but have it shipped because if I'm going to eat meat I want it to taste like meat.

You're right. If I want beef with taste, I get it at a local butcher shop.
