Namealreadytaken and kitty60, thanks. That's interesting then, that the reviews say that. I do always read the directions. With the clean edge of the Kuhn Rikon, would I be able to put the plastic lid on the dog food can, or would it not grip? I guess it doesn't really matter since I would only be using it for that if the electricity went out, but I'm curious about that.

I don't know what kind of food you use but I put the plastic lid on the cat food. Just as an aside: I got all 3 of my sons and their families one of these long ago and the kids in the family figured it out before the parents, and two of them are Mensa's. LOL.

Okay, thank you. That's good to know. My dog eats Hills prescription i/d. It should be the same type of lid as the cat food.

I have 2 of these can openers. They are very easy to use and I can put them in the dishwasher. I threw away my electric one because I had a difficult time keeping it clean.

Portable Can Opener, Black

What brand is that?

Here's a manual one that Bob Bowersox recommended:

It is only hard to get the cans open if you do not follow the instructions or you are too young to read.

Boy, this is such a nice reply. And be sure that I'm being sarcastic.

Why would you want to spend a lot of money on a back-up can opener? Just get one of the above. It's what I use all the time because I don't like an electric can opener or the space it takes up.

It says Swing-a-Way embossed on the side of it. I probably purchased it at a mart type store or maybe the grocery store. I have had these for about 10 years or so. I noticed that Amazon sells them for about $6.

I have the Kuhn can opener and love it. As an aside, I never store my dog's food (or any food) in the can it came in. Once I open the dog food can, I put the remaining food in a Lock&Lock. It stays fresher and doesn't turn into a rock. I personally don't like the idea of storing food in its tin can once opened.

I have pretty severe arthritis in my hands and fingers and have no trouble using the Kuhn Rikon can opener. I was just looking at Zulily today and they had a similar opener but the handle turned like a crank which seemed like it would be easier. I'd never bother to dirty a contain in order to store dog food for 2 days.

The Kuhn Rikon opener is fabulous. I use it all the time and have given several as gifts. Yes, it's a little different than a traditional can opener, but once you catch on to how it's done, it becomes second nature from then on out.
