Can anyone recommend a hand held mandolin slicer? I mostly want it to slice tomatoes and onions. If it is dishwasher safe that is a big plus. Some of the negative reviews that are posted on line have given me second thoughts about buying one . Your input is appreciated.

I have a swiss borner v slicer. I like it better than any I've ever had. It's not something I'd put in the dishwasher so I'm not sure if it is or not. I bought the dial one they had here several years back. It went in the trash.

I also have the V slicer and one from Genius. Both are good. I just swish them in hot soapy water, rinse and put in the dish drainer to drain. Smiley Happy Smiley Happy I wouldn't put them in the dishwasher, even on the top rack.

I just found one for $3.00 at the H H ReStore. It had never been used, it was the one with the dial, but Mom needed one to slice onions and tomatoes this Sat. Smiley Happy Smiley Happy Smiley Happy

Primary problems with most of them are 1) inadequate safety features, and 2) ease of cleaning. I got this one from Amazon, recommended as a best buy, by Cooks Illustrated, who tested a bunch of them: Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline It also has a huge number of great reviews on Amazon.

I have an inexpensive plastic one with a straight blade that I probably bought at QVC. It has a knob on the side to adjust the thickness and to switch from straight slices to julienne slices. It has worked just fine for me. I don't put it in the dishwasher, but it's easy to swish it clean in soapy water and drip dry.

I don't see it on QVC.com so I can't give you an item number, but I've had it for a number of years and use it often.
