KITCHENAID JUST LAUNCHED ITS NEWEST APPLIANCE

[ Edited ]

Are you ready for this?   A rice cooker costing $300.

I saw the article in today's Martha Stewart email, but I am not impressed.   It's also on the KitchenAid website, of course.

My question is ... if you have or have ever had a rice cooker, how often did you use it?   (Anyone who has owned an Asian food restaurant is disqualified, LOL)  Woman LOL

You'd have to eat an awful lot of rice to make this thing worthwhile, lol.

Re: KITCHENAID JUST LAUNCHED ITS NEWEST APPLIANCE

I have a rice cooker.  I used to use it a lot because my rice never turned out so well cooked on top of the stove. It was always a gooey, blobby mess.

I finally learned to rinse my dry rice really, really well and no longer have a problem cooking it.  I haven't used my rice cooker for years.

If I had to make a large amount of rice, I would use the cooker, but it's not  needed for the 1 cup of rice I usually cook at a time.

Re: KITCHENAID JUST LAUNCHED ITS NEWEST APPLIANCE

We have two Zojirushi rice cookers and use them at least once a week. One is at least 15 years old and makes great rice to this day.  It is a white Fuzzy Logic one that was expensive when we bought it.

The newer one, which was cheaper, is a smaller Zojirushi but it also does quinoa, steel cut oats, and some other things.

We love them and use them all the time.  We also have a small and a large Zojirushi bread machine, and a couple water bottles.

@Tinkrbl44    I'd never pay $300 for a rice cooker either lol.  My minute rice cooks quickly and easily in my little pot.

@Tinkrbl44  We use a Proctor Silex rice cooker we bought at Walmart for about $20.00. We don't cook rice anymore, but I make our steel cut oats in it every week. I just put in a cup of oats and add 4 cups of water, turn it on and let it go, lid off, for 50 minutes. Done. Love our cheapo rice cooker!

I would've never thought to cook oats in one.  Very clever!

I use my pressure cooker to cook rice after rinsing it well.  Works so wonderfully, that I can't imagine buying a special appliance just to cook rice.  Also does a great job with steel-cut oats.

I eat steel cut oatmeal almost every morning for breakfast.  I microwave them for 4 to 5 minutes and let them sit for about two minutes.  They are perfect.

No rice cooker or stove is needed.

Re: KITCHENAID JUST LAUNCHED ITS NEWEST APPLIANCE

I took a look at it on the Kitchenaid web site. It's certainly interesting. It's includes 21 presets for cooking rice, bean and grains. And it measures the necessary water for each based upon weight and setting. So you don't have to measure the water yourself. It takes the water from a tank.

Interesting in that it doesn't appear to make a lot of rice. I know families that cook a lot of rice and this would not make enough rice for them. This is not a heavy-duty rice cooker/steamer.

We've had several rice cookers over the years. They're very convenient and make good rice. Although we've used them more for steaming vegetables than for cooking rice. Never paid more than $20 at Target for one.

These days I make rice in the Instant Pot. It turns out really well and it's so easy. Haven't used my rice cooker since I got an Instant Pot.
