Why or why not might I use one/need one? I've never watched a show on them.

They multiple functions, but the Instant Pot is primarily a pressure cooker.

Thank you very much! Just what I needed to know.

IP has been THE name in Pressure Cookers, UNTIL...the Ninja Foodi arrived. Now IP has come out with their own ('DUO CRISP) to compete with the Foodi which is now wildly popular.
First look, the DUO Crisp appears cumbersome, but IP will eventually perfect their own 'Tendercrisp' process.
I have both the IP (not DUO), and the Ninja Foodi, as well as the Ninja GRILL.
I'd recommend the FOODI. It can do everything the IP can. All recipes for IP work in the Foodi

Yes, it's a pressure cooker though it has additional functions as well.
You may think you don't need one, but you do :-). I've had one for about 4 years and love it. In fact when I'm thinking, "What do I want to fix for supper," I typically think, "What do I want to make in my Instant Pot?"
Check YouTube for dozens of Instant Pot videos. Check Pressure Luck Cooking:

Jeffrey's videos are wonderful - he's a very enthusiastic Instant Pot user.

I wish the IP was as easy as everyone makes them out to be. When I got married, 44 years ago, I was given a pressure cooker, tried it, thought I was going to blow myself up. After that disaster, I promptly gave it to my MIL and never looked back UNTIL the IP came to market. I just cannot get the hang of it.

Hoovermom,
The Instant Pot IS as easy as everyone makes it out to be. I'm sorry you're having difficulty. It sounds like it's residual fear from you past experience with a stovetop pressure cooker.
MUCH help is available online. What model/size do you own? I suggest that you join the Facebook group called Instant Pot Community. It has 2.2 million, yes million members. There's no question you can possibly post there that someone can't answer. I'd also suggest checking out Barbara Schieving's Pressure Cooking Today website. Barbara is extremely helpful and her recipes are great.

@Hoovermom, I get it. I never had one of those old fashioned pressure cookers so never learned how to pressure oook. My mom had one though and never had an explosion but do remember that it was a dangerous device. I did get the CE 2 qt just to try i out, but really all I ever use it for so far is for eggs. It's too small for mashed potatoes because I want leftovers for that. But, I see no reason to get a larger one until I can come up with enough things I want to cook in it to do so. I'm also a picky eater so that could have something to do with it. Most of the stuff I see in the demos don't appeal to me.
