Ina gartens corn bread recipe

I told someone I would post this recipe but I'm trying to find the person  and I can't seem to find you so I'm posting in this way do you will see it.if I have to redo it I will.

3 cups all purpose flour

2 cups milk

1 cup fine cornmeal

1 cup granulated sugar

2 sticks of butter

3 eggs beaten

2 tablespoons baking powder

Melt butter in a cast iron pan until butter starts v to brown but not burnt.  Mix milk, melted butter in a bowl, then add beaten egg to milk.sift all dry ingredients and mix in a bowl. Mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients and let rest for 15 minutes. Sprinkle top with salt. bake for 30 to 35 minutes.   I once sprinkled sugar instead of salt so when I noticed it I sprinkled salt on over the sugar. It gave it such a good flavor that I do it all the time.I figured I would include my mistake and you decided to give it a try or not but good luck and enjoy Nd let me know what you think of it.

@Pooky1

I love sweet corn bread. I add a bit of sweet white corn into my corn bread and usually make muffins vs a round loaf. I also glaze the top (when still warm) with a honey/butter mix. I think I will try your salt/sugar idea. I bet it's delish.

.

Thank you for sharing your recipe.

I just use the recipe on the back of the White Lily White Cornmeal mix bag.  No sugar.

Right off the bat this is an absolute NO for me.  Ina might call this cornbread, but in my area of WV this ain't cornbread!  One cup of cornmeal to 3 cups of flour, plus a whole cup of sugar, is NOT the kind of cornbread my WV family eats.

Red top I like the way you said what you said.  Originally making cornbread for me was buying a box of jiffy corn bread mix so when I started looking at cornbread recipes I was surprised how little cornmeal actually went into a cornbread recipe..

@RedTop I have cooked for more than 55 years, have had hundreds of cookbooks, and yep--that's CAKE.

WAY too much butter and sugar - MOST of her recipes are high in butter, sugar, and calories - NO THANKS.

Re: Ina gartens corn bread recipe

So I never knew until tonight that there is Southern Corn bread vs  Nothern Corn bread and it's all about sugar and eggs. So I had to pull out my recipe card and I make a southern style corn bread as a base, but many times I add other ingredients...like corn or jalapeños, bacon, cheese....just depends.

.

Thanks again @Pooky1 for sharing your recipe and starting an interesting rabbit hole for me to go down. 😀

Re: Ina gartens corn bread recipe

Real cornbread for me is no sugar and is delicious which is what I prefer and I am southern and grew up on cornbread.  When sugar was added it was called sweet bread and was more of dessert.  I always make cornbread to go with soups, stews, chili and soup beans with ham (pinto beans, navy beans, great northern beans, kidney beans). Good comfort food when it is cold.
