I'm thinking of getting an induction countertop burner

They look pretty impressive and most days I only use one burner. Does anyone here have one, if so what brand and how do you like it? I'm especially intrigued by the idea that you can set them for a specific temp (say 370 degrees for frying) and not have to worry about the oil over heating. I'm seeing prices from $50 and up, but with them using less electricity I suspect the payback could come in just a year or two of use. I've got plenty of induction ready pots and pans, so that's not an issue. If you've got one, let me know what kind and how you like it. Thanks.

Re: I'm thinking of getting an induction countertop burner

I have one and love it.  I got the 1800 watt NuWave, got it through HSN when it was a TSV.  I love the quick response and the steady temps.  It's more responsive and accurate than my electric cook-top.

For me, the biggie is the accurate simmering.  During the colder months I make a lot of soups and chili and love being able to simmer for hours without worry.

I never use mine.  I also got it from HSN, but you can buy them anywhere.

Re: I'm thinking of getting an induction countertop burner

I have two of the NuWave's and wish I could have gotten the latest one that HSN had a couple of weeks ago.

Tthat one has a second outer coil that would be much more effective in terms of how much of the pot is exposed to an element.  Both of mine work fine but I would bet this one works just that little bit better.  I also had one that I purchased from ShopNBC a while ago (sorry don't know the brand) and it worked fine too.  Another reason I prefer the newer NuWave's is that you can adjust the temperature by 5 degree increments instead of 10 which many models have (my older one for example).

My electric stove and oven are both out of commision so I use the NuWave and a Breville oven for all of my cooking.  If I ever get the chance to remodel, I would most definitely get an induction cooktop.  If your home is electric, it is the best way to go.

Would any of you take an induction cooktop over a really good gas cooktop?

Sooner, I don't know if it is fair for me to answer this question as my experience with gas is extremely limited but I would go with induction for two reasons:

1 - you can set the temperature to exactly where you want it and it will hold that temperature indefinitely.

2 - much less of a fire hazard so no worries about watching your sleeves or towels/potholders around the coils.

I have a NuWave I purchased about 2 years ago.  I truly don't know why I "had to have" it.  I rarely use it as I have a 5 burner gas cooktop with variable BTUs.   The NuWave does a nice job in keeping temperature when I am deep frying, and also brings water to a boil in a nano second compared to my gas cooktop and has a host of convenient features.   Perhaps if my kitchen had more counter space I would use it more often.

The only thing I noticed is that it seems not to heat the pan evenly, (I use pans designed for induction).  But perhaps the new and improved model has corrected that.

I will say, if I ever remodel my kitchen again I would install an induction cooktop. For one reason, the clean up is wonderful compared to what I have and I feel it is safer with the ability to use a timer.

Re: I'm thinking of getting an induction countertop burner

I bought the NuWave burner from HSN (TSV) a few weeks ago and haven't used my stovetop once since I got it. I absolutely love how fast It cooks, and the real bonus is that the burner does not throw off heat like my regular electric burners do. I can't find one negative thing about it. I had never heard of induction burners before seeing it on HSN. Glad I was watching that day.

Re: I'm thinking of getting an induction countertop burner

It's interesting that everyone has the NuWave one. I think I'll probably grab one of them. I do a fair amount of frying and it gets tedious watching the deep fat thermometer all the time and constantly adjusting the heat. Something I could set and know it was keeping the right temp would be handy. I'll still test it the first few times to see how accurate it is, but if it works well it should be very helpful. Thanks for the replies.

Re: I'm thinking of getting an induction countertop burner

I got one a little over a year ago, set it on one of the burners on my glass stovetop and haven used a burner on my stove since.  Between the induction burner and my Breville convection oven, I don't even need a stove.  The induction burner totally spoils you.
