Re: How important is your dishwasher?

For anyone simply using the dishwasher for "storage", a word to the wise:  turn off the water supply.  The hoses in a machine that is not used can deteriorate over time and you can have water flooding your kitchen unexpectedly.  Find the shut-off valve and turn it off.

Watching an episode of House Hunters recently and the young woman turned down an otherwise perfect apartment because there was no dishwasher.

Really? I survived the first 25 years of marriage without one and even now I don't run it daily.  I could easily get by without it, and I do a lot of cooking and baking.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being "couldn't live without it", how important is your dishwasher.

For me I'd have to say it's a 3.

Dishwasher is crucial for us ... on a scale of 1-10, it's a 25 ... at least. We run ours at least 4 times a day ... and it's usually full loads. If it was just my husband and I, it probably wouldn't be so important ... but we have 6 dogs and 5 birds and their bowls are 2 loads every day. We've had many dishwasher repairs/replacements over the last 10 years and we dread having to wash everything by hand at those times.

The best idea I ever saw on any of the HGTV shows was on an older Property Brothers show (still in Canada).  After the home was selected, the woman/wife/mother told the brothers she wanted 2 dishwashers in the kitchen and 2 washers/dryers in the laundry room. I thought those were great ideas.

Makes sense for some people. My dream kitchen would have two fridges. I have one in the basement now, but I'd rather have two in the kitchen.

I had an expensive dishwasher in my last house. It broke after 2 years and was going to cost $450+ to replace the entire computer system so I replaced it with a cheap model that was a real workhorse. When I moved to this house I bought a simple one, as well.

I also detest unloading the dishwasher. I think that's why I prefer to do them by hand .. when I'm done everything is put away and I can forget about it.  When the dishwasher is running I am constantly thinking about having to put everything away.

Re: How important is your dishwasher?

I give it a 10.....and I don't even have one. My kitchen is extremely small and I just don't have room for one. I don't even have space for everything I do have....and would like to have. I've had dishwashers with vacation rentals or used them when visiting friends for a meal, etc.

@house_cat  I used to think that it wasn't that important but found that using it regularly has helped some of tummy issues so now I'd rate it pretty high up there.

@house_cat, I run mine at night. While the coffee is brewing in the morning, I unload.

I am 75, live in rent, and only had a dishwasher once ( for about three years) in my life.  I really never think about having one.

Re: How important is your dishwasher?

Not having a dishwasher would't stop me from an otherwise good property, BUT not having one Might make it harder to sell later. Everyone Expects a dishwasher these days.

Myself, I don't know what I'd do if I ended up with my hands in a cast. What other dishwasher do I really Need?  Besides, That's the time we usually " Shoot the breeze".

My first apartment, years ago didn't have one, no big deal. But then, I worked in a restaurant, ate out a lot, didn't cook much either.

Every other apartment and home has had one.

I don't run it daily. I do the little things everyday by hand. By the end of the week I'll start to just fill it up and run it once per week usually. At that point I throw in things I want to disinfect or clean at least once a week, like sponges, sponge holders, ceramic toothbrush holder, even the toothbrushes!

So, I am glad to have one. I've never had the need to run it daily. It's mostly a once a week thing. Some weeks everything got done by hand and I never run it.

@amyb After removing all of the hair I put my hairbrushes on the top rack.
