Re: How do you store your favorite recipes?

[ Edited ]

I have a pretty recipe book I got years ago, that has pocket pages. I store different categories in each pocket section...salads, seafood, desserts etc. Different friends or mom's recipes on 3x5 cards are in there too.

I also have a manila folder I keep in a dining room buffet, with cutouts from various magazines or print-outs off the web.

Then I have a small collection of favorite cookbooks. I'm no longer collecting, as there's only just enough room for what I have...and frankly, I won't live long enough to cook ALL the recipes I have, or even a small fraction of them. I tend to cook all my favorites over and over, but venture out also from time to time. I love reading and having my cookbooks but only occasinally cook from them. Keep saying I need to though!

Re: How do you store your favorite recipes?

I have a 3-ring binder with plastic sleeves.

I should be scanning these to make a pdf so I can replace if needed.

If I find a recipe online, I print 2X:

1st    Make a pdf file which I keep on computer

2nd   Paper to put into binder

Thanks for other ideas!!!

My son turned me on to using Google Docs.  I LOVE using it!  I created a file called My Recipes and then it has options to make sub-titles to organize your recipes into groups like, soups, appetizers, main dishes, desserts, cakes, pies, pasta, etc.

   So, I have everything right at my fingertips when I need a recipe.   It's also great if you're grocery shopping and need to look up the recipe so you can get the ingredients you need just by clicking on the Google Doc app on your phone.

I use Paprika for all my recipes. It's easy to edit and they're available on all my devices.

Re: How do you store your favorite recipes?

I have a small recipe box with index cards and I also keep a couple of cardboard file folders in a kitchen drawer.  I do like the idea of a simpler system.  I'm off to Amazon to find something better to store them in.  I'm not rewriting any of them though!

@MsChiff

I've never heard of this. Is it a website? An app?

On 3x5 index cards in a wood recipe box. I don't care if the cards show the sign  of wear or a small wiped off food  splash from some ingredient -- I think it adds to their authenticity and shows a little part of me. I hope that someone uses these recipes after I am gone and thinks of me when they see the "small tracks " of wear and tear left by me on the cards of my favorite recipes.

@house_cat

I print out the recipe, insert in plastic binder sleeve and put in binder.

Works really well,  The plastic helps with the drips and splashes on the recipe and with a binder the flexibility is endless.

I've outgrown one large binder, time to either cull the recipes or just buy another binder lol.

ETA:  I see others do the same thing, sorry about the duplicate but glad to share as I like the system so much.

Re: How do you store your favorite recipes?

@house_cat  I had so many different ways for storing my favorite recipes (binders, bookmarked cookbooks, scraps of paper tucked into cookbooks), I finally started converting them to Word documents so they were all in one place.Then my kids asked me to make a family cookbook. So, I now have one entire Word doc with headings, page numbers and a table of contents. When I want to find a recipe, I just do a search for the title or an ingredient.

It's not quite finished, but I will eventually send it out to one of those cookbook publishers who do church cookbooks, etc. The handwritten recipes from my mom, cousins, grandmother and great-grandmother have been scanned and are included in the cookbook, along with many photos of food and family members cooking and grilling.

Re: How do you store your favorite recipes?

The family recipes are in their original file boxes on index cards. I have my mother's, my MIL's, and mine. In addition, I have a fourth box containing the ones from miscellaneous sources. I did enter the absolute favorites on a file in my computer and sent it to my son. He was thrilled to get them. I often use that file myself.
