How Much Is 1 Medium Onino

When a recipe calls for 1 medium onion how much does that measure out to? I recently made a vodka sauce which called for 3 med. onions. I put in what I thought were 3 med. onions and it was way too much. Would appreciate if anyone can help me out. TIA
