Feline,   Thanks for the Apple Chart!!   Love apples in any form from sauce, to turnovers, pie, dumplings, baked, pudding, caramel apples, salad, spiced, etc. to fried apples.

I hope you don't mind that I pinned it on Pinterest so I could find it easily.

Thanks again and see you on Cats!!! Cat Happy

Thanks for the chart.   Right on, FG, about the Gala.  It's been my favorite for some time now.

Last year, or maybe it was the year before, I tried the one called 'Honey Crisp' (I think that's the name - something Crisp anyway) that I've seen people here rave about.  I didn't care for that one and went right back to the Gala.   I imagine Ru and Tarz might like any of them.  hehe

This year I learned about a new (new to me) one - the Opal.  It's really very nice.  It's very nice and crisp, sweet, and kind of tastes like a pear would if a pear were more crisp.  They are large-ish and yellow.  They seem to be gone now but I was getting those for as long as my store had them.  Hope they come back next year.

I've tried the Honey Crisp too, felt kinda "meh", and like you I went right back to our fave.   8-)

I first tried the Gala apple back in the 80's or 90's, an awesome place called "Delicious Orchards" in Colts Neck, NJ.

Ever since then, nothing's come close for me re: the perfect taste combined with a crisp texture.

Yep; Ru and Tarz are probably plotting RIGHT NOW to steal some apple pieces every now and when you're totally not paying attention, heh.

Opal is the brand name for a variety of apple produced by crossing Golden Delicious with Topaz.

That's interesting, FG.  Thanks for that info.  At any rate, they are very nice and since you also love the Gala, you might also like these.

I don't like apples that are mushy or sour.  Even if I cook with them or make an apple crisp or something, where a lot of people would use those sour Granny Smith apples, I still use Gala apples.

[ Edited ]

I'm an apple lover.  Don't care about charts.  Picked some off the trees yesterday at a local orchard (I believe they were Cortlands and Macs.)  Ate one on the spot.  Just unbelievable.  The orchard's store is open 'till some time in November.  By comparison, apples from the supermarket taste like plastic.

Re: Helpful chart for apple lovers

I love Gala apples, jonagal and a few others.  I did not care for the Honey Crisp as well.  I just didn't know what the big deal was.  But I live in California and I don't think HC are grown here.  Maybe they were not good or old?

We have an apple farm about 20 miles west of here, they produce some of the best Gala and Fiji ever, and organically.

Cortlands make THE best pies I think!  We always buy a bunch when we see them, mix up a ton of pie filling and freeze them.

I like Galas best for eating and Jonagolds are good too.  If Yellow Delicious are really cheap I'll buy them.  But they aren't as good as they used to be.

Organic apples are much much better to me.  I think you can taste that stuff on the sprayed ones.
