Was cooking in a stainless pan. Didnt realize it was burning and now it is a mess. I have tried soaking in hot soapy water.  Tried boiling on stove with just water, that helps at times.  SOS pad is not helping. Is there any suggestions that might work?

@CherryHugs  Hi. I have Barkeepers Friend but you don't need it if you have baking soda handy. These are my own photos of my stainless steel Farberware pans with burned on black debris. This pan is 40+ years old.I put the water in the pan with baking soda in it. I bring to a  boil and boil a few minutes. Turn off heat and you can use a fork or any utensil to easily to push off the loosened gunk. Works.like magic. 2604D8E5-4868-4737-93E0-D943F24BDD4E.jpeg116800F3-12CD-4141-A5B1-548F92AB2581.jpeg

CherryHugs, the Ladies have given you excellent suggestions. Someone burned my Farberware Stainless Steel pan. I really thought it was a lost cause but I tried cream of tartar, baking soda and Bar Keepers Friend. And with work I got the pan clean. You can not tell the abuse that the pan went through. The pan looks like just as nice as the rest of the set.

I have since bought a "Thumb Scraper". I think that would also help you clean the pan. The Thumb Scraper has cleaned other things in the kitchen that I thought was hopeless.

Yes I know what will work...

You’ve likely used one or more Bar Keepers Friend products and perhaps other products to clean your Instant Pot and other stainless steel cookware you own. I have as well. However, I recently decided to try the following:

Bar Keepers Friend Superior Cookware Cleanser and Polish

https://www.barkeepersfriend.com/cleaning-products/cookware-cleanser-polish/

and it’s fabulous. Note, it is not the same as their regular cleanser in the gold can. Bar Keepers Friend Superior Cookware Cleanser and Polish comes in a SILVER can.

This is how Bar Keepers Friend Superior Cookware Cleanser and Polish is described by the company:

“Looking for the best way to clean stainless steel or copper pots and pans? Can’t get that baked-on residue off your glass casserole dishes? Our Superior Cookware Cleanser & Polish can keep your cookware looking brand new. Specially formulated to remove tough grease, rust stains, lime buildup, and mineral deposits, and 50% more grease-cutting detergents than our classic cleaners, Cookware Cleanser & Polish works harder, rinses faster, and requires less work from you to get amazing results.”

There’s a sticker on the top of the can I received that says “Like New or Your Money Back.” On other cans this phrase is printed on the can. I’ve used it on my Instant Pot, and it does look like new! I also used it on pieces of my All-Clad cookware, and it did a beautiful job on those as well. Finally, it did a great job cleaning and shining my stainless steel kitchen sink. Note: the company states that it should not be used on polished stone such as marble or granite, so if your countertops are made of those, be careful when using this cleanser & polish.

If the Bar Keeper's Friend in the gold can does the job for you, great but if not, try the one in the silver can I recommended.
