I used to hollow out a store bought Angel Food cake (cut off the botton and hollow out cake)

Mix whipped cream and sliced fresh strawberries & use to fill in hollowed out cake, replace sliced off cake bottom.

Top cake off with more whipped cream and sliced strawberries.

chill and slice to serve.

If I was to make a cake like that singly, it would take over an hour of time. So, if you figure in an hour's labor at $12-$15 an hour, the cost of the cake isn't too bad. You've got the cake batter to make up, the pureed strawberry layers, the icing, the toasted slivered almonds. There's a lot of work in that little-bitty cake. Even if you ignore the baking and cool down time, you're looking at about an hour to do everything else.

That's not much for a cake. Cakes at Whole Foods cost about the same.

Williams-Sonoma cakes go for a lot more. This one is $79.95.

Life's too short not to treat to an indulgence once in a while...that Strawberry Chantilly Cake is beautiful and tantalizing...I would pay that price easily!!

Could I make a cheaper version?  Absolutely.  But I'm sure it wouldn't be nearly as good or nice looking.  Everyone spends their money on different things.
