Gourmet holiday – outrageous prices!

The prices on gourmet holiday for the last couple of years have increased to where every day people cannot afford them. I noticed today for their 5 hour gourmet holiday show that they had pies; sweet potato and peach that were $75.98 for two pies. Do you really think a family can afford to pay that for two pies? Is QVC trying to establish a higher class group and leave out middle income families who can’t afford these prices but yet watch the show to look for food items that they normally wouldn’t find in their local supermarket. And why do they have to make some desserts so large in size (4 or 5# Cakes)? And have you noticed that on the portion size that the host or seller say are not really portion sizes that every day people would do.

I've never thought QVC's food prices were particularly reasonable, but that's why we always have to shop around.  In the past, I've used their presentations for getting good ideas before shopping elsewhere.

Re: Gourmet holiday – outrageous prices!

I've never bought food from QVC but I was looking at various places for Christmas dessert. One place for a raspberry cream cheese pie is $30.00, a place where we stop when we drive back from Flagstaff is $26.00 for any of their pies. I really can't make them for that price considering my time, ingredients, electricity etc. QVC is a bit overpriced but not stupidly out of range (in most instances).

@Dans mom

.

There's a very simple solution to your complaint.  If you can't afford the prices for somebody to prepare your food and send it to you by air with a satisfaction guarantee, pass it by and shop for the food elsewhere and fix it yourself.  End of problem.

.

For most people this is an occasional holiday treat or gift for which they budget.  You spend your money as you wish and let other do the same.

Welcome to the Forum @Dansomom.

Yes, prices are up quite a bit, but it's also the price of the food...think meat price increases, increase from the vendor, then QVC.

*

It's possible most are buying just for holidays. not too much strain on their wallets.

*

Older people may not want to cook an elaborate meal, but want something special and good might be candidates. A special treat.

*

Businesses often order gourmet food for executive meetings and parties.

*

I buy some for gifts.  It's worth it because grocery stores, even local bakeries don't compare.  I'd give everything I purchased 5 to 10 stars.

Re: Gourmet holiday – outrageous prices!

QVC's food prices have always been high.  And, of course, they have gone up over time, especially recently when things everywhere have either increased in price or shrunk in size.

People are voting with their dollars.  If they're selling products, then people are buying and paying the price.  You really can't compare the cost of food already prepared to what it would cost for you to prepare.  The prices are closer to what you would pay for said item in a restaurant.  But, for ME to prepare most items, it actually probably would cost me what they're selling it for since I don't cook that much and gathering all the ingredients fresh would add up.

I don't buy much food on QVC, but for th last few years I have bought the St. Clair sides for Thanksgiving, except the one year when the 4 sides included something with broccoli in it.  This year, the 4 sides were $81.  Worth it to me to not have to gather all those ingredients and cook them AND fix other things along with preparing the house.  It also lowers the stress level.  I did think $81 was a bit high until my daughter pointed out the cost of a local place's full Thanksgiving dinner at about twice the price.  Of course, that included the meat and dessert, but then I also left two of those sides in the freezer to have later.

Taste is also important and I know I like the St. Clair sides, especially the dressing which tastes pretty much like my own.  I have tried Publix and Cracker Barrel's Thanksgiving dinners in the past and I didn't like them.

Re: Gourmet holiday – outrageous prices!

Everything is relative. If you look at high end food catalogs QVC charges about the same price. Food is very expensive right now. Already made and delivered to your door. If you do not like it you can return, not sure anybody else gives that service for food. I just wish some food  portions sold were smaller.

Yes, it's expensive but I think most people buy food items as gifts for loved ones elsewhere, not for their own dinner table.  (What's that saying Q likes to say?  Buy to, ship to???)

It's expensive but I would rather pay my local bakery for a fresh baked, not frozen cake or pie.  Also cookies and pastures.  I have bought directly from Omaha steak, and Pike Place in Seattle which is shipped overnight and comes frozen solid.

.

Goldbelly's is an excellent site for gifting food. It can be expensive so I plan ahead for a special treat for myself (Like MaCloons lobster rolls) or gifts.
