Mine do when I bake my own. I use brandy and they get a soaking in a clean all cotton dish towel to age for a couple of weeks.

 

I like the idea of Grand Marinier.

@mspatmac No, we make the cakes sometime in November, make the glaze with the alcohol in it and pout it on the cake, wrap it is cheesecloth and put it in a tin.  Then we resoak it as needed.

 

The cake and fruits are moist and still cake like, but keep well and aren't dry and bitter like an un-soaked cake.  It is a very very traditional of making the cakes.  It was much done in colonial times and in England. 

 

We make mostly small loaf cake sizes and wrap them up tightly and store them in the garage fridge since we don't have root cellars any more!

I agree with you. I do not care for the taste of food that had alcohol added. It just ends up being thrown out.

Other than Beatrice's sold on QVC, those I tried in the past did not, but sometimes soaking fruitcakes in alcohol is suggested because it kills bacteria and slows spoiling.  Some recipes call for soaking the fruit before baking.

My grandmother used to make the most delicious fruitcake cookies.  I loved them!  

 

Now I buy the small Claxton fruitcakes at the local small market.  I bought a Collins Street fruitcake once and didn't like it as well.  I know some people don't like Claxton, but that's what I've eaten for years and like it.  I look forward to it.
