Does Anyone Else Use Long-Life or Irradiated Milk?

I live alone and am not a big milk drinker but like to have some on hand for cooking or an occasional bowl of cereal.  I prefer almond or coconut milk which is only available in half gallons.  I'd find myself throwing most of it away.

One day I discovered cartons of the long-life milk on my grocer's shelves, did some research on it and finally got the nerve to buy it.  I was expecting some kind of funky taste but it tastes exactly like the fresh.  It comes in quarts so I keep it in the pantry and use as needed.

It is more expensive but the fresh was no bargain when most was thrown out.  I can now use just what I need with no waste.  It's available sweetened or not in almond or coconut or a combo of both, made by Silk.

It's not exotic; I get it at Walmart.  It's a great product for when there's no refrigeration too.

Read more about it.

I live alone also, and don't drink a lot of milk, but it is nice to have on occasion.  My daughter told me about milk in cartons that have a long  shelf life when she lived in Germany.  It is difficult to find in the stores near me, but I did find it at the Dollar Tree of all places.

I was a little leary about trying it, and it only comes in a quart size which is perfect for me.  They did not have skim milk, which is what I normally drink. But, they did have 1% and another version with a higher fat content.  Well, it is very good and I keep a couple cartons in my pantry.  The use by date on the carton I bought is February l6, 2017, and the carton information states it must be kept refrigerated and used within 14 days after opening.    It is produced by Gossner Foods, Inc. and a product of the USA.  So, I was very happy to find this at the Dollar Tree.

When I was in college, my boyfriend was an exchange student from Germany. My father is also from there. Germans have used shelf stable milk for decades.

They also sweeten coffee or tea with condensed or evaporated milk. It makes great hot cocoa.

Another strange food they have in their cupboards - sausages in jars or cans.

I don't use much cow's milk either - mostly almond milk. So I keep a few boxes on hand for baking.

I don't drink much milk, either....so I buy Organic which has a longer shelf life then regular milk...and I feel it tastes better...

Still I wind up throwing most of it away....as I can only find it in half gallons...I shop at Walmarts....I will look for what you bought...

@terrier3   Don't tell me you lived to adulthood without eating Vienna Sausages?

@circles.....Organic does taste better. The military has used this milk for a very long time. I am picky with my milk due to my sensitive taste buds. How some people are with wine, I'm like that with milk. It is my nightcap of choice. Mine has to be organic cow's or goat's milk. I prefer fresh, which my goat's milk is since my cousin farms them. I get organic, skim milk from the store since we stopped with the dairy cows. When you grow up with fresh milk, butter and cream, then the store bought stuff tastes like water.

We keep skim milk for drinking and cereal.

For baking, I use whole milk. I buy it, then put into small containers for the freezer. Whole milk freezes well. It doesn't take long to defrost.

I hadn't heard about long shelf life milk - very interesting!
