Re: Do you clean your own house?

I have unrealistic expectations of a cleaning lady/service and can often find a speck of dust they missed. I know, that is so unfair! LOL

All my neighbors have cleaning ladies, but currently I am choosing to clean my own home. Since I adopted a minimalist lifestyle and don't have a lot of "stuff" collecting dust and we have a place for everything and everything in it's place, cleaning is not the onerous job it once was.

Yikes! That's pretty awful. My worst bad experience was about 30 years ago when she must have (I have no proof, but it was there before and gone after) broken the one thing I had from my childhood and she got rid of it., assumably figuring I wouldn't notice it gone. I still think about that sometimes. It was the oldest thing I had and the only thing I had from my, albeit pretty qrappy, childhood. It's irreplaceable of course. Smiley Sad I loved it.

For the most part, since then, I have always hired people who work for themselves and also are part of a 'chain'. In other words, she works for several other people I know so if she burned one person everybody else would know and she would lose a lot of clients. Consequently, I don't have to worry about it. She NEEDS all of us because this is her only living. Fortunately, she is an honest person anyway.

I do the cleaning...I don't mind doing it either....I would not want to pay for something I can do myself.

Yes. To be honest I enjoy cleaning, it relieves stress and I love having everything tidy and clean the way I want it. The only house chore I hate is laundry. It's a luxury, but I send it out, I just hate doing it.

Re: Do you clean your own house?

Yes I do the majority of my own cleaning, and my husband helps as well. The house is clean enough to satisfy the 4 of us; this is our home, and we are comfortable, which is all that matters.

Re: Do you clean your own house?

When I worked I had a friend who came in and cleaned, stripped the beds, laundry, and even took the dry cleaning to the cleaners. She would surprise us and we have come home and she would have dinner ready for us in the microwave. She would organize my closet, etc. She was really gold. We no longer have her as she has been working outside of the home and traveling and would spend the winter in Fla. I am now disabled and housebound as I have Fibromyalgia and arthritis after a mastectomy and another major surgery. I am so frustrated and wanting to work, but health wise and being 64 yrs. old now, my house needs a major cleaning as I cannot even cook without getting in a lot of pain. My husband helps me, but he does the main living area and my blinds need cleaned as well as windows, window sills, baseboards, and also carpets cleaned. We have a large house which is a two story and a finished basement as well. I can't do steps well and we also hire our yardwork done. I want a one story condo or house if I have to. When I cleaned. my house would be meticulous and I would do the hardwood floors on my hands and knees. I love a clean house, but my husband is a "slob." Help!!!

Re: Do you clean your own house?

DH and I do all the cleaning including the windows! I used to have a cleaning lady but alas she took a retail job and I haven't been able to find someone suitable to replace her. I wish I could.

When you hire someone to clean your house they should show you proof they are insured and bonded. The being insured relieves you of responsibility if they are injured on your property and the bonding shows they are honest, and if something was stolen it would be covered. Companies that bond people do extensive background checks on them. Yes, you will pay a bit more when you have a truly professional bonded and insured person but it's worth it to me. Where I live you can hire an illegal to clean your house for $25 but that doesn't mean she isn't going to steal you blind.

You will never replace someone like the lady you had but maybe you would be happier if you hired a service to come in. There are services whose job is to assist the disabled - ask your doctor about it.
