Delicious Cooking and Baking

I owe it all to my mom who taught me how to cook and bake.

I know she will be looking down upon me tomorrow to make sure everything turns out great.

Nothing was every premade, no dessert was ever purchased, I always wondered growing up why she spent so much time in the kitchen and didn't opt for store bought, I know why now.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the other wonderful cooks out there.

Re: Delicious Cooking and Baking

I wish I could say the same thing about my mother teaching my sibs and me how to cook but she did not.  She barely allowed us in the kitchen to be silent observers sitting or standing next to her soaking in her techniques.  So sad and I believe my sibs would agree with me, they know.  We can each count on one hand combined how many times our mother allowed us to try our hands at fixing the extremely occasional supper while growing up.  Even then she planned what we'd fix and then was running in & out of her kitchen to make sure we did whatever her way.  And then, instead of complimenting us she'd tell us we were not doing it right.  We'd end up leaving it all behind only for her to finish whatever she planned.  Yes, all very sad.

Even at our ages today, I continue to be amazed at just how great we all turned out to be in our respective kitchens.  I'd have to say we are all three self-taught, reading our own cookbooks that helped us learn our own techniques and tastes.  Both of my sibs create great things in their kitchens for our families and friends.  They can things, they bake the best desserts.

Funny, none of us have ever gotten sick or died (LOL) from any of our own creations.  So my sibs and I pat each other on respective backs for being the BEST cooks we are today!

Re: Delicious Cooking and Baking

When my mom could no longer cook and bake she shared her recipes with her daughters. Since I was the one who as a child loved to help her bake all the sweet treats, I have all those recipes. Yesterday I made her homemade spice cookies to take to my brother's for Thanksgiving. We have all loved her cookies for so many years  that it just doesn't seem like the holidays without them. Our parents passed away 4 years ago so it is just the siblings, our spouses, and kids now.

My mom taught me to bake too, and she baked all kinds of things from scratch. Bread, pies, fancy decorated cakes. I remember being in elementary school and learning to bake apple pies from the neighbors trees. We always got bags of apples from them and my mom would have me take a pie down as a thank you.

That is so sweet. My mom eventually gave me the recipes for my childhood holiday favorites and I still use my grandmothers pie crust recipe. I really need to teach my own daughter how to make it.
