We don't do it on a schedule per se, but we'll do the vinegar thing when we think of it.  When we descale our coffeemaker (vinegar for that too), DH will toss the collected solution in the bottom of the dishwasher. I guess he thinks he's being economical and killing two birds with one stone, even though plain white vinegar is about the cheapest thing in the store.  🤷‍♀️😁

@amyb  You can get citric acid in many places.  I usually order a small bag thru Amazon.  Fruit Fresh (used fo keep fruits from browning) is also available at Walmart, Ace hardware, and most grocery stores during canning season.  Hope that helps.

@Pooky1, I found the Affresh dishwasher cleaner smelled SO horrible - took a couple of days to get the smell out of my kitchen - so I had to find a substitute. I just used the LemiShine brand this week. It smells fine and my dishwasher (Bosch) looks great. Found it under my kitchen cabinet, no idea where I got it! I did also buy Cascade Platinum dishwasher cleaner on Amazon, but haven’t used it. And the Affresh brand washing machine cleaner does not have an offensive odor, seems to work well.

Heloise says that she recommends 2 packets of regular lemon flavored Kool Aid into the place where you usually put dishwasher tablets. Run a cycle with no dishes. I have done this and it works like Affresh.
