@mare54  We bought a Sharp in 1984, and it lasted us well into the new century. Solid and reliable. I don't know if they all have turntables these days, but that's a must. Also, as some have said, make sure the wattage is enough for your daughter's needs.

 Whirlpool corner microwave!  Love mine!

750 W power...I cook, using the regular High (1,000 W) time and check with a thermometer.... and it is the same!

Well, this just shows how old and out of touch I am. I was not aware that newer kitchens have built-in microwaves. Thought they are all countertop LOL!

Most microwaves in newer kitchens are now what they call Over the Range, and they fit over the cooktop into the wall. . My friend redid her kitchen a few years ago and hers is built in to one of her drawers.

I did a kitchen remodel a few years ago and opted to move my microwave from over my stove to a microwave in a drawer.   Love it and was able to incorporate a new gorgeous hood over my oven.

I'm sorry you didn't love your second Sharp.   I've been lucky, I supposed.   My very first microwave (ages ago) was a Sharp and I liked it, but after about 18 years I wanted to upgrade to a newer one (buttons instead of dials!) but that first one still worked fine.  I had a friend who wanted a microwave but couldn't afford one so I asked if they would like to have this one.   They were happy to get it, so I  bought a new one.

My second one also a Sharp and I had that one for just over 18 years before something (I can't even recall what it was) went wrong and I had to replace it.

My third one is another Sharp, which I purchased many years ago.  Can't recall how long, but it's been quite a while and this one has been great so far.  I don't have any complaints.  I like the turntable, though.  I think it helps get stuff to heat/cook more evenly.  Smiley Happy

Mine bit the dust last weekend.  I had gotten it at Wal-Mart and had lasted me 11 or 12 years.

I ordered a Toshiba from Amazon and it was right around $100.00.  It looks very similar to the Farberware MO that loriqvc posted.

@Estates.  8 hav3 limited counter space, never had a big kitchen, so years ago I got an over-the-range micro that replaces the oven hood.  Works out great.   I couldn't get along without my microwave.

I could get along without mine!  I'd rather warm the food at 325 for 12-15 minutes to reheat!  Tastes better to me!

I have a built in over the oven that I never use.

Instead I use the best microwave I've ever had and that's my Cuisinart. It's stainless and not ceramic, so easy to clean. Plus it doesn't transfer odors.

It's the right size and serves every need. If it ever breaks, I'll get the same thing.

Yeah, Cuisinart. Also have their can opener.
