Decided to clean my dishwasher filter. Went onto the KitchenAid website for instructions.
Followed what the directions said and the according to the directions, you "gently turn assembly quarter turn counterclockwise and gently lift it out". When I turn it counterclockwise, it does not lift out. The assembly just spins. When you try and lift it nothing happens.
It sounds so easy in the directions. Anyone have a suggestion?

It has never occurred to me to clean the filter on our Bosch dishwasher. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!

Is the dishwasher relatively new? If not maybe age has changed the structure, i.e. stripped parts.
I'd be leery to try as if that part gets damaged it may change how the dishwasher operates.
Then again you may get great advice and the filter will come put easily lol.

We have a Bosch DW and clean the filter about once a month. The stuff it collects, Yuck. so cleaning it is a good idea.
I do as the instructions for your KA says. I turn it counterclockwise. It comes out easily. I rinse it out in the sink. Remove any gunk and put it back in with a clockwise turn.

We have a Jenn-Air dishwasher, similar to Kitchen Aid. I follow the same instructions as you. My filter pulls right out.

I never clean my filter, but I use the dishwasher more to sanitize than to remove gunk from my dishes. I scrape and rinse everything first. MY DW is in its second decade of life - I'm not tempting it to malfunction now - it's not worth paying for a repair. I know I need new - just not right soon.

Try YouTube. I've fixed many things based on YouTube videos. Don't give up on the first one because there's usually someone who's had the same problem you're having.

Went to YouTube and found the video for the cleaning of the filter for my dishwasher model. My husband and I watched it.
My husband said it was above his pay grade. And if he tried to get to the filter, we would definitely need a repairman. I agree.
Kitchenaid has redesigned their dishwashers and the filter is NOW real easy to clean. My model is older and not easy to get to.
I think that commercials saying that you don't have to preclean your dishes affected my family. I find dishes that have food particles on them. And that started me thinking of the filter. Thankfully my dishwasher does not smell and dishes come out clean.
