How do you pronounce this word? I am in Southern California, where we say Chi po TLAY
Just watched a Diners Drive ins and Dives from a Connecticut restaraunt where everyone was pronouncing it Chi POL Tay..
Is this a regional thing? Just wondering....

I say chi pol tay. It probably is regional, I say it that way as that's the way I first heard it pronounced.
*ETA* Wiki basically says you're right. chi-poht-lay;

Whenever I watch any cooking shows they pronounce it like you do mothertrucker and I think whenever I have gone to one (it's been a while) that is how they pronounce it as well.

I guess you'd say the Midwest, although my pronunciation is strictly from cooking shows.

You are pronouncing it correctly. Those pronouncing it otherwise are mispronouncing it by transposing the T and the L. This is not a regional thing; it is an issue pronouncing foreign languages

I eat at Chipotle a few times a month. We pronounce it Chi-poht-lay. The other pronunciation doesn't make sense to me since you'd have to switch the letters to make that correct. I don't think it's so much a regional thing as just a mispronunciation.

Do you remember the Jack in the Box commercial about 10 years ago that featured the new Chipotle Cheeseburger? It had a kid trying to teach Jack how to say "chipotle." Got his mouth all twisted.

I'm from Philadelphia and, like NickNack, I say Chi POLT lay. I know it makes no sense to say it with two L's as there is only one L in the word, but this is how I've always said it. Most people I know say it the same way. I don't know why.
