I had dark green marble counters with white cabinets in my old house. I loved those counters. When we put in an island, I used white quartz. I loved those too. LOL
There are so many options today. You almost cannot go wrong with anything you choose. The Bordeaux granite is beautiful.
Personally, I'm not a fan of black counters. I know they are popular though.

I think the black counter tops would be beautiful if you are going to have light walls and floors, otherwise I think that would be too dark.
The marble patterned quartz posted is gorgeous.

My cabinets look like the ones posted by Iwantcoffee and I have Typhoon Bordeaux granite like posted by Lolakimono except mine is a little more white in the background. Lots of movement and the darker browns and burgundy colors are really picked up when matched with the cherry cabinets. We have a lot of light in that kitchen and get lots of compliments on it!
My sister has black granite with very little speckling and she can't wait to rip it out and replace it with something that doesn't show the fingerprints. They drive her insane! If you want black discuss with some other people in case there are types that don't show the fingerprints as much. It is a beautiful look!!
OP, what kind of cherry cabinets/stain do you have? Not all cherry is stained dark like we are assuming. You might have a natural cherry which is very light ![]()

What color cherry cabinets? Cherry can be from the very darkest reddish brown to a much lighter reddish tan. My camper has the light reddish tan shade and it has corian in a beige tone with some black in it. My home has a medium tone cherry cabinets and light beige counters.

I have black granite on our large kitchen island, while the other counter tops are a brown with a lot of different tones in them. I also have a guest bathroom with a black granite counter top sink. The black granite in the bathroom always has water marks on it. It is pretty but has to be constantly cleaned. The black granite on our island is really pretty. It is more a dumping spot for newspapers, backpacks, etc, so not a lot of food prep goes on there, even though there is a sink in the island. It does show smudges but is easy to clean. For me, the beauty of it outweighs the need to clean it often. I think I would shy away from black granite around your main kitchen sink because of the water marks surely will show up.

On 8/12/2014 Q2girl said: Hi everyone! I really appreciate you taking the time to send pics and great ideas! I have not picked out my cabinets but they look like the pic that I want coffee posted. And I saw granite similar to what the other posters posted. So pretty. I would love the look of Marble, the white color. I have not found a granite place that sells quartz for the same price. I would love marble color quartz. Of course the marble color granite is more expensive than a grade one darker granite. So I guess it is the same price as quartz at my shop.
I am linking you to an article on the cost of granite vs. quartz.
I bought my countertops, cabinets and farmhouse sink from the same local place. They were able to get me the sink for less than if I got it on-line. Same thing with the quartz.
I spent two years before I re-did my kitchen and shopped everywhere from the big box stores to the local shops. I ended up saving $4,000 going with the small local store. The article below mentions that the price of quartz varies from store to store.
I just purchased my supplies from them - I had my own contractor.

There are so many beautiful colors and patterns out in granite and quartz, don't limit yourself to black. Go out and look or go online. It is an investment with different prices for different grades.
I went to a home show and saw a quartz I loved by Cambria. That was four years before I even did my kitchen or picked out my cabinet color. A little backward I know, but I just loved the color so much I worked around it.
