I always leave the pit in, too, but by lunch the next day it is still brown and really not appetizing looking. I used to buy avocados more often, but now I have to really think about. My DH loves them, too, but my kids won't eat them. Also, my DH likes them in or ON things, and while I love that, too, I also just love a 1/2 avocado sprinkled with kosher salt and a spoon.
If you're a nut for proper food storage, as am I, a vacuum sealer is definitely a must have item. It is one of the things, I would say in the top 2 or 3, that I would NOT want to be without.
Anyway, you might want to try taking a piece of cellophane wrap and laying it on top of the avocado half. Then, with your fingers, push it down so that it is right up against the exposed part of the avocado, COMPLETELY covering it. To preclude air (as much as you can without vac sealing it anyway) from having contact with the exposed part you would have to push it down onto the area completely. Then wrap/store it as you otherwise would.
Or, just get a vacuum sealer!

I found this out too...it will even keep guacamole fresh for a few days.

Last time I was trying to save the half avocado, I also had some leftover sliced tomato. So I put the cut avocado half, with pit, face down on the tomato. I tried to use the tomato to cover all the surface of the avocado. Put in a box in the fridge for a day. It changed color but in a good way and I didn't see any loss of flavor. I threw out some of the more mushed tomato and put the rest along with the avocado on bread for a sandwich. Tasted fine.
I'll repeat the experiment and see if there was a catch but it did seem better than the alternatives.
I am going to try all these other tricks - esp the onion one. They sound great!

Exactly that. I then put it into a simple sandwich bag.
If you get a little browning on the cut side, that's just harmless oxidation, like on cut lettuce leaves. - Bird

I love avocado. Especially with french dressing.

Pit in, skin on, wrap in that Press 'n Seal wrap. Good for a couple of days.

That's exactly the way I eat them. Love them!!
IF I do have a half left I keep the pit in and just wrap in plastic wrap and then I put it in a baggy...it's usually fine the next day. Even if it gets a little dark you can just scrape it off with a knife.
