Re: Anyone else remember leftovers before the invention of the microwave?

One of my favorites was potato patties......my Mom made them from yesterday's left-over mashed potatoes.......they were yummy and I loved that they had a little bit of crispy crust on them after frying them.

Yeah, straight from the "icebox" to my mouth.

The first one that came out was the Radarrange.

Thank goodness for our experiments with radar during WWII.

Does everyone realize that when you look into the microwave through that mesh, that the only thing keeping the oven from cooking you is the fact that microwaves move at a frequency that doesn't allow them to make it through the mesh?

It'll make you take a step back next time you're cooking something.

We used lots of Reynolds wrap in the oven to heat up leftovers. Remember cold meatloaf sandwiches? Cold pizza for breakfast? We used to eat a lot of cold fried chicken.

Of course, because there are still some things I opt to reheat on the stove or in the oven as opposed to making use of the microwave.

Cold fried chicken is my favorite! I like it hot, but cold even better. I like leftover cold beef too.

Re: Anyone else remember leftovers before the invention of the microwave?

I don't use my microwave very much. I have family members that refuse to eat anything that was "nucked" Occasionally. I thaw something out when no one is here to see me. I, like my mother, recycle leftovers. Mashed potatoes get turned into patties or potato soup. Ham and other meats are added to salads or used for sandwiches. Left over veggies are used for stir fry or soups. Bread is used for french toast or puddings or stuffings. I guess I have to hide that fact that the food is left over before anyone will eat it.

My first microwave was the shiny new Amana Radar Range somewhere back in the 70's. There was a free class with purchase that taught how to use it. They made chocolate cherry cake, cauliflower, fudge, and chicken and rice. I made Shake N Bake pork chops, oatmeal, scrambled eggs. Not usually with as good a result as same thing made by traditional method. So now I mostly use a microwave for steaming vegetables and the occasional reheat. I like pizza leftovers heated up in the regular over to stay crisp and evenly heated.

Anyone else remember the Radar Range?

OMG! I had one, and as I remember it was purchased in about 1981. It finally died about two years ago, and you have no idea how bummed I am. I hate new microwaves. The Amana worked so well for me. I actually mourned the loss of it!

We had one too.It is still kicking at my mom's house! We have the cookbooks that came with it.
