Anybody remember "Hobo" bread, it was baked in a can?

A neighbor lady would make this and pass it out to others on our street. It was a sweet bread, maybe similar to cake and it was brown in color. I remember liking it as a kid when I would be lucky enough to get some. Do you know what I'm talking about? This was back in the 60's.

I used to have a recipe for baking bread in the small coffee cans. It was delicious! I remember it having sugar thus the sweetness. My recipes are in storage at the moment or I would be digging through them looking for this recipe.

Your reminding me of that bread brought back nice memories of early marriage. Thank you for bringing another smile to my face today!

I remember a recipe similar to this. It was called Boston Brown Bread and baked in a tin can.

It's been a few years since I've looked; however, you could buy the Boston brown bread in the cans in stores. Nummy. Molasses and raisins. I, too, remember baking it at home in a can. I bet there is a recipe on line. Ahhhhhh, the good 'ole days.

There are lots of recipes on allrecipes and cooks and other websites.

Heres' one:

Hobo Bread

"Two kinds of raisins beautify this humble quick bread. This is an unusual bread baked in 3 coffee cans. It must be started the night before."
INGREDIENTS:

1 cup raisins
1 cup golden raisins
4 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups boiling water

4 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil

DIRECTIONS:

Place the dark and golden raisins in a medium bowl. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water, and pour over raisins. Let stand overnight without stirring.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease three 1 pound sized coffee cans.In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar and salt. Stir in the raisins with their water, and the oil until well blended. Batter will be thick. Divide the batter evenly between the 3 cans.Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the crown comes out clean. Lay cans on their side to loosen the bread as it cools.

YES!!! I was just talking to my Mom (soon to be 85 years old) about that bread recently. We were reminiscing about anything and everything that day. My grandmother made it when I was a kid but my Mom and I never knew what it was called. I just remember how delicious it was and that she baked it in a coffee can. Thank you for the memory~and now I will be on the hunt for a recipe that resembles hers.
