Re: An outdoor Thanksgiving

[ Edited ]

Your son sounds like a sweet guy, but eating outdoors in 50 degree weather doesn't sound at all comfortable. Many people are forgoing the traditional family turkey meals this year, including DH and me. Maybe have a pumpkin pie (or whatever your family likes) and invite him over for an inside visit and keep your social distancing in your home. Or get some smoked turkey from your grocer's deli and a salad or two and have turkey sandwiches, salad and pie inside.

Edited: just a thought after reading some comments here. Would your son expect you to rent a table, warming tray and heat lamps? I don't think he sounds like he would. Maybe he's thinking of you and didn't want you to have to spend the day alone! If he does come over, I'd make it a simple get-together inside! 50 degrees is too cold to be sitting outdoors and trying to eat a meal!

I live alone, and my family live in another state. I don't have the money nor the time to go visit. Every year, friends invite me over but I usually decline because I LIKE to enjoy the day alone. This year I won;t have to worry about invites since everyone is being asked not to have groups of people. I just hope those that can, do enjoy being with their family and friends.

@PilatesLover    How about eating the actual meal at your individual homes and then having dessert with your son?  We may do that with friends that we have seen all thru the pandemic but no one is willing to eat a meal outside, especially in our location.

I love all of your responses and suggestions.  I decided to support our local small business dining establishments and am ordering individual boxed meals and a vegan pumpkin pie.  If we can't pull off the al fresco number, then DS can take his packaged meal home.  Depending on the weather we are planning a long walk at a nature preserve.

As a lot of you pointed out - yes, he is a great kid.  I hit the son jackpot for sure.  It truly is about the stopping and giving thanks, acknowledging gratitudes.

I wish all of you the best with your Thanksgiving!

No, would not want to sit in 50 degree weather just to eat a meal. I'd thank him for thinking about us, but then have a traditional meal for two inside our cozy home.
