Last week I bought a bag of Lay's potato chips, took it out of the shopping bag and put it in the cabinet. The bag was perfectly fine, expiration date Sept. 20.

Last night I got a craving for chips. When I took the bag out of the cabinet, the bottom seam was completely open, as if someone had opened the bottom instead of the top. There was no sign of any animal chewing, none of the chips had spilled out or appeared eaten.

This has never happened to me. Never. There is no indication a can of beans or something fell on it. It was in the same position as when I put it into the cabinet. I guess I put it in upside down?

I live alone and don't sleepwalk.

Any possible explanation?

Well thats not it!  Its really strange and I wouldn't think they would be safe to eat in case they opened prior to you buying them, maybe a small rip that opened further once you had them.

If you live alone, how do you know you don't sleepwalk?

The only possibility is that it wasn't thoroughly sealed at a seam and popped open.  You undoubtedly didn't notice it at the time since it was on the bottom.

Were there any cocktails consumed while putting said bag of chips in the cabinet?  😉

I have noticed sometimes that a big change in temperature can make a bag blow up. The grocery store is air conditioned. Maybe the ride home the bag of potato chips expanded  from the heat. The car can get hot while you are grocery shopping.

And the expansion from the heat made the seal to come undone.

I saw that happen to a bag of nachos this summer. The bag blew up but it did not open.
