Re: 7 Layer Salad, PLEASE help

LAYERED TACO SALAD

1 pound ground beef
1 packet taco seasoning mix
3-4 cups cornbread cubes

2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 head iceberg lettuce, chopped

1/2 cup ranch dressing

1/2 pint cherry tomatoes in halves or quarters

chopped scallions for garnish

sour cream for garnish

Cook ground beef with taco spices.

In a large glass bowl layer cornbread, ground beef, cheese, lettuce, drizzle ranch dressing. Repeat layer.  For the top layer use remaining cornbread, cheese and the tomatoes.  Top with a dollop sour cream.  Scatter chopped scallions.  Let sit for 1/2 hour.

I used a trifle bowl for this.

I don't use the purchased taco mix but mix the following to season tacos.

2 T ground cumin

1 T smoked paprika

2 t garlic powder

1 t freshly ground black pepper

1 t oregano

1 t kosher salt

To season 1 pound of ground beef I would use 2-3 T according to taste

Re: 7 Layer Salad, PLEASE help

Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman) has a walk-through on her 7 layer salad.

It's been 100 yrs. since I made one, but I didn't use spinach or egg.  And the mayo topping had parmesan cheese with bacon bits sprinkled on top.

Re: 7 Layer Salad, PLEASE help

This is what I like in mine:

lettuce

black olives (sliced)

radishes (sliced)

water chestnuts (sliced)

green onion (sliced, or red onion chopped)

frozen peas

mayo

shredded cheddar

crumbled bacon

As long as you start with the lettuce and end with the layer of frozen peas/mayo/cheddar/bacon I think you can put anything you want in the center layers and it'd be great!!  I always make mine a day ahead of time.

Re: 7 Layer Salad, PLEASE help

This is the Best ever.

I head of lettuce  (chopped)

4 green onions    (chopped)

I green pepper     (chopped)

5 salks of celery   (chopped)

1 can  diced water chestnuts

I bag of frozen  green peas

Starting with lettuce add to bowl in that order.  Cover the frozen green peas with Hellmans mayonaise  and cover  all the peas going to edge of bowl making a seal.  Then ontop of  mayonaise sprinkle 3 to 4 tablespoons sugar covering the mayonaise.  Cover and refriate at least overnight.  Before serving add shredded  cheddar cheese, sliced  boiled eggs, tomatoes, and fried bacon crumpled

Note The mayonaise,  and sugar makes a dressing as the frozen peas thaw..  I use a see through punch bowl.  The salad is very pretty in layers.

Not bragging on myself but this has been in my family for years and  everyone raves.

Enjoy.

Re: 7 Layer Salad, PLEASE help

You basically create 7 layers of salad of ingredients you like. I use Romaine lettuce, various colored peppers, garden peas, tomatoes, chopped egg, diced ham, carrots, cheese, bacon and dressing (I don't like the plain mayo used in many southern recipes). More than 7 layers, but yummy and pretty in a big glass bowl or trifle dish.

Re: 7 Layer Salad, PLEASE help

My most requested dish of all time!  Been making it for 35 years.

Seven Layer Salad!!

1)  Iceburg lettuce chopped up.

2)  Layer of chopped celery

3)  Layer of chopped green pepper

4)  Layer of frozen green peas

5)  Layer of Helmans Mayo mixed with about half cup or so of sugar)

6)  Layer of shredded cheese

7)  Layer of cooked crumbled bacon

I wash and dry my veggies the day before. This is better if they are dry and crisp.

So delicious!!!
